(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South
Athletic Conference has announced its 2012 All-Conference awards
for football. A total of 90 student-athletes have earned
All-Conference honors. Ferrum College's Tim Reynolds was named
the Offensive Player of the Year while Christopher Newport
University's Paul Dukes earned Offensive Rookie of the Year
honors. LaGrange College's Andre Carter was named
Defensive Player of the Year while Maryville College's Gabe
Johnson earned Defensive Rookie of the Year accolades.
Rounding out the individual awards was Greensboro College Head
Coach Bill Young who was named the Coach of the
Year. The USA South also recognized an
All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each
competing school.
All honors are determined by votes from the football coach
at each institution.
Reynolds, a sophomore quarterback from Arlington,
Virginia becomes the third straight Ferrum quarterback to
collect offensive player of the year honors after former Panther
Marcus Mayo earned the accolade the past two seasons. Reynolds
led the Panther passing and rushing attack this season
by averaging 255.9 yards of total offense per game and
scoring 28 total touchdowns. He was 115-of-189 through the air for
a league-best 60.8 percentage. On the ground, Reynolds averaged
87.6 yards per game which ranked fourth in the Conference with a
USA South-best 15 touchdowns. For his efforts this season, Reynolds
was named a First Team All-Conference selection at
quarterback. Finally, he was named USA South Offensive Player
of the Week three times this fall.
Dukes, a freshman running back from Norfolk,
Virginia, averaged over 100 yards per game in Conference action
this season. Overall, he carried the ball 140 times for 759 yards
which was good for fifth in the league while
scoring four touchdowns. Dukes had his best outing versus
USA South foe Greensboro when he ran for a career-high 144 yards on
20 carries. For his efforts this season, he was a
First Team All-Conference selection at running back and earned
USA South Offensive Rookie of the Week honors five
times.
Carter, a Villa Rica, Georgia junior linebacker
collects the first-ever individual All-Conference honor in
LaGrange's short history in the USA South. For the season, he
compiled 79 total tackles, 53 of which were solo take downs which
ranked tied for third in the Conference. Carter accumulated 15
tackles which resulted in a loss of yardage which was the
second-most in the league this fall. Additionally, he forced three
fumbles, recovered two fumbles, intercepted two passes and recorded
a USA South-best two safeties. For his efforts, he was
named a First Team All-Conference linebacker and Defensive
Player of the Week once this fall.
Johnson, a freshman linebacker from Villa Rica,
Georgia, led all USA South
rookies with 61 total tackles and 35 assisted take downs this
season. He also compiled 11.5 tackles which resulted in a loss of
yardage which was the most among league rookies and ranked sixth
overall. Additionally, Johnson forced two fumbles, recovered two
fumbles, intercepted two passes and broke-up four throws this
fall. His efforts this season earned him
Honorable Mention All-Conference honors at linebacker and
three USA South Defensive Rookie of the Week accolades.
Young, in just his first season at the helm, becomes the first
Greensboro football coach to collect Conference Coach of the Year
honors. Young took over a program which had lost 11
consecutive games and led The Pride to a 5-5
overall record with a 3-4 mark in Conference play, good for a
fifth-place tie in the standings. Prior to the season, The Pride
were unanimously picked in the Preseason Conference Coaches
poll to finish last in the league. This fall marks just the
second time in school history that Greensboro has finished a
season with a .500 record.
