USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 18, 2023

  • Football Offensive Player of the Week
    Carson Daniel, Huntingdon - The senior quarterback from Killen, Alabama accounted for two Huntingdon touchdowns in a 40-14 win over Guilford last week. Through the air, Daniel was 14-of-19 for 204 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Daniel carried the ball three times for four yards and one score. Also Nominated: Chancellor Lee-Parker, Brevard.

    Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
    Antojuan Woody, Huntingdon - The freshman wide receiver from Camp Hill, Alabama scored two touchdowns, one through the air and one on the ground, in a 40-14 win over Guilford. Woody caught two passes for 67 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown. On the ground, Woody scored on a 17-yard scamper, his only rush attempt on the day. Also Nominated: None.

    Football Defensive Player of the Week 
    Grequenceo Coger Jr, Brevard - The graduate student linebacker from Macon, Georgia was in on seven tackles, including two for loss in a 17-14 loss to Averett. Coger collected six solo tackles and one assisted take down as his two unassisted tackles for loss pushed the offense back five yards. Also Nominated: Colby Hyder, Southern Virginia; Casey Peppers, Huntingdon.

    Football Special Teams Player of the Week
    Trey Hampton, Maryville - The senior placekicker from Hendersonville, Tennessee was 2-for-2 on field goals and 3-for-3 on point-after-touchdowns to contribute nine points in a 27-20 win over Shenandoah last week. Hampton connected on field goals of 22- and 24-yards in the win. Also Nominated: Will Edwards, Huntingdon.

  • Men's Soccer Player of the Week
    Ammon Lewis, Southern Virginia - The Katy, Texas junior forward scored twice in a 2-0 week for the Knights. In a 3-2 win over Eastern Mennonite, Lewis scored twice including the eventual game-winning goal in the 66th minute. In a 2-1 win over Marymount, Lewis was held scoreless but managed one shot on goal. Also Nominated: Lata Mateo, Pfeiffer; Brennan Lagana, William Peace.

    Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Trey Gohr, Methodist - The Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman goalkeeper picked up his first two collegiate victories as the Monarchs posted a 2-0 record last week. In 140 minutes played, Gohr stopped all nine shots faced. In a 4-0 win over Warren Wilson, Gohr played the first 50 minutes and made four saves. In a 1-0 victory over Guilford, Gohr posted his first collegiate shutout by making five saves.     Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Karim Ndiaye, Pfeiffer - The Harrisburg, North Carolina freshman forward scored two goals with one assist in a 1-1 week for the Falcons. In a 5-1 win over Piedmont, Ndiaye assisted on the game's opening score before notching an insurance goal of his own in the 49th minute. In a 2-1 loss to Bob Jones, Ndiaye tied the game with a goal in the 64th minute but it proved not to be enough to gain the victory.   • Women's Soccer Player of the Week
    Taylor Richardson, Brevard - The Seminole, Florida senior forward scored four goals last week as the Tornados posted a 3-0 record. In a 6-0 win at Agnes Scott,  Richardson was held scoreless. In a 7-0 victory over Warren Wilson, Richardson recorded a hat trick with three goals. Finally, in a 2-1 win over Carolina University, Richardson scored the game-winning goal in the 74th minute.     Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Nicole Arroyo, Brevard - The Yulee, Florida sophomore goalkeeper posted a shutout and three wins last week for the Tornados. In 227 minutes played, Arroyo allowed just one goal while making six saves. In a 6-0 win over Agnes Scott, Arroyo posted a shutout and also added an assist. Also Nominated: None.

    Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Yaneli Sanchez, Methodist - The Garner, North Carolina freshman midfielder scored twice with one assist last week as the Monarchs posted a 1-1 record. In a 2-1 loss to Guilford, Sanchez got the Monarchs within one with a score in the 85th minute. In a 10-0 win over Warren Wilson, Sanchez scored a goal in the first half and assisted on one in the second half. Also Nominated: Austin Huffman, Brevard.

  • Volleyball Player of the Week
    Hannah Hewett, Methodist - The senior setter from Whiteville, North Carolina averaged 11.90 assists and 3.40 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record against USA South opposition last week with wins over Brevard, Mary Baldwin, and Pfeiffer. Hewett recorded just one setting error while accumulating 119 assists. Hewett posted two double-doubles and had week match-highs of 46 assists, 16 digs, four service aces, and one kill (twice). Also Nominated: Valeria Rosa Lopez, Salem; Sydney Bassett, Southern Virginia; Lauren Bissette, Meredith; Makenna Parkins, Brevard; Haedyn McGrath, Pfeiffer.

    Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
    Blake O'Brien, Methodist - The senior libero from St. Louis Missouri averaged 5.80 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record against USA South opposition last week with wins over Brevard, Mary Baldwin, and Pfeiffer. O'Brien had week match-highs of 25 digs, five assists, and two service aces. Also Nominated: Gabby Edwards, Pfeiffer; Jilane Pedersen, Southern Virginia.

    Volleyball Rookie of the Week
    Savannah Hovander, Methodist - The freshman middle blocker from Greensboro, North Carolina averaged 4.30 kills per set with a .400 hitting percentage as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record against USA South opposition last week with wins over Brevard, Mary Baldwin, and Pfeiffer. Hovander had week match-highs of 20 kills, three blocks, one assist (twice), and one dig. Also Nominated: Karmen Rion, Pfeiffer; Sarah Hoofman, Southern Virginia; Kinley Copeland, Meredith.

  • Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
    Dylan May, Southern Virginia - The Missoula, Montana junior placed second out of 179 runners at the Longwood Lancer Pink Invitational last week. May completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:46. Also Nominated: Alex Topoly, Methodist; Sawyer Helms, Pfeiffer; Dalton Hawley, Brevard.

    Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
    Cannon Powell, Pfeiffer - The Harrisburg, North Carolina freshman placed second out of 55 runners at the Pfeiffer Invitational last week. Powell completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 27:07. Also Nominated: Gabe Sawyer, Methodist; Ethan Hughes, Southern Virginia.

  • Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
    Madison Lowery, Pfeiffer - The Kannapolis, North Carolina senior placed first out of 56 runners at the Pfeiffer Invitational last week. Lowery completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18:53. Also Nominated: Savanna Chapin, Southern Virginia; Maddie Merna, Meredith.

    Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
    Delaney Bundy, Meredith - The Cary, North Carolina freshman placed 27th out of 106 runners at the Queen City Invitational last week. Bundy completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:35. Also Nominated: Makalyn Wilms, Methodist; Makayla Borst, Pfeiffer; Lissie Hill, Southern Virginia.
