USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 4, 2023

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Tim Johnson, Belhaven - The graduate student quarterback from Mobile, Alabama totaled 261 yards passing with two touchdowns in a 47-7 win over Millsaps last week. Johnson helped the Blazers to a 33-0 halftime lead and exited after one third-quarter drive. Johnson was 11-of-13 through the air with a long pass of 71 yards. On the ground, Johnson carried the ball seven times for a total of eight yards. Also Nominated: Zackary Orr, Brevard; Daniel Carson, Huntingdon; Keyshaun Pete, Methodist; Alec Williams-Carr, Greensboro.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Tyler Moon, Maryville - The freshman wide receiver from Jonesborough, Tennessee accounted for two touchdowns and 81 yards of total offense as the Scots defeated Sewanee, 28-8. Moon carried the ball 11 times for 63 yards and a touchdown while catching one pass for an 18-yard score. Finally, Moon added a 31-yard kickoff return in the victory. Also Nominated: Antojuan Woody, Huntingdon.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Landry Huddleston, Belhaven -
 The sophomore linebacker from Irvington, Alabama totaled a career-high nine tackles with a game-high two tackles for loss in a 47-7 win over Millsaps last week. Huddleston accumulated three unassisted tackles and six assisted take downs while his two tackles for loss resulted in pushing the offense back seven yards. Also Nominated: Robert Dorsey, Brevard; Jacoby Young, Huntingdon; Josh Hill, Methodist; Max Steele, Greensboro.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Chavarius Garrett, Belhaven - The freshman defensive lineman from Senatobia, Mississippi totaled two tackles and one sack in a 47-7 win over Millsaps last week. Garrett's lone sack resulted in a loss of four yards. Also Nominated: None.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Hugo Taylor, Brevard - The junior place kicker from Charleston, South Carolina was a perfect 3-for-3 on his field goal attempts and 2-for-2 on point-after-touchdown tries in a 29-23, overtime, loss to Warner last week. Taylor nailed a game-tying 40-yarder with seconds remaining to force overtime. He also connected on another 40-yard field goal with a 36-yarder as well earlier in the game. MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Asuncio Gonzalez, Pfeiffer - The Kannapolis, North Carolina junior forward scored a pair of goals in a 2-0 week for the Falcons. In a 4-0 win over Guilford, Gonzalez scored his first goal of the year in the 20th minute. In a 3-0 victory over Ferrum, Gonzalez tallied an insurance score in the 72nd minute. Also Nominated: Ryan Lynch, Brevard; Craig Thomas, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
Rafael Farina, N.C. Wesleyan - The Montevideo, Uruguay freshman goalkeeper allowed three goals and stopped 14 shots as the Battling Bishops posted a 0-0-2 record last week. In a 1-1 draw at seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins, Farina stopped four of the five shots he faced. In a 2-2 draw with Rensselaer, Farina totaled eight saves. Also Nominated: Cristian Del Cid Portillo, Greensboro; Nico Soriano, Pfeiffer.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Alex Michael, Pfeiffer - The New Orleans, Louisiana freshman defender helped the Falcon defense post two shutouts in a 2-0 week. In a 4-0 win over Guilford, the Pfeiffer defense allowed five shots on goal while in a 3-0 win over Ferrum, the Falcons allowed just two shots on goal. Also Nominated: Craig Thomas, Greensboro; Trey Gohr, Methodist; Wessel Eldering, N.C. Wesleyan.



WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Darilyn Nieto, Salem - The Greensboro, North Carolina sophomore forward scored five goals in a 7-0 win over Hollins last week, the only contest for the Spirits. Nieto notched Salem's second through sixth goals beginning in the 15th minute and concluding in the 59th minute. Also Nominated: Yaneli Sanchez, Methodist; Emma Avery, William Peace; Yailine Riera, Pfeiffer; Grace Black, Brevard; Meredith Warrick, Meredith; Amery Skinner, Greensboro.

Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
Sofia Pagnamenta, Greensboro - The Woodbury, Connecticut sophomore goalkeeper posted a 0-1-1 record, with one shutout, last week for the Pride. In 180 minutes played, Pagnamenta allowed two goals and stopped 25 shots. In a 2-1 loss to Salisbury, Pagnamenta made 17 saves. In a scoreless draw against St. Mary's (MD), Pagnamenta stopped all eight shots faced. Also Nominated: Kaylea Carter, Methodist; Gaby Vazquez, William Peace; Nicole Arroyo, Brevard.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Yaneli Sanchez, Methodist - The Garner, North Carolina freshman midfielder scored her first three collegiate goals with an assist last week as the Monarchs posted a 1-1 record. In a 1-0 loss to Stockton, Sanchez was scoreless on seven shots on goal. In a 4-2 win over Kean, Sanchez notched the first hat trick by a Methodist player since 2017 with three goals, including the eventual game-winner in the 53rd minute, while also adding an assist. VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Morgan Shrader, Pfeiffer - The senior outside hitter from Matthews, North Carolina averaged 4.29 kills and 1.43 digs per set, to go along with a .429 hitting percentage, as the Falcons posted a 2-0 record last week with wins over Warren Wilson and N.C. Wesleyan. Shrader had week match-highs of 18 kills, seven digs, two assists, one service ace, and one block. Also Nominated: Hannah Collier, William Peace; Lauren Bissette, Meredith; Valeria Rosa Lopez, Salem; Kaitlyn Pressley, Brevard.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Blake O'Brien, Methodist - The senior libero from St. Louis, Missouri averaged 7.31 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 1-2 record last week with a win over Huntingdon and losses to Maryville and Sewanee. O'Brien's week match-highs included 33 digs, six assists, and one kill. Also Nominated: Gabby Edwards, Pfeiffer; Logan Moore, William Peace; Bailey Lance, Brevard; Hannah Jo Jablonski, Meredith; Ashlyn Wood, Salem.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Jolina Bun, Salem - The first-year defensive specialist from Winston-Salem, North Carolina averaged 2.93 digs per set as the Spirits posted a 3-1 record last week gaining wins against Thiel, Southern Virginia, and Bridgewater with a loss to Virginia Wesleyan. Bun posted week match-highs of 17 digs and five assists. Also Nominated: Savannah Hovander, Methodist; Gabriela Gama, Pfeiffer; Maggie Gibbons, Meredith.



MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Devon Brodmyer, Brevard - The senior from Marietta, Georgia placed 44th out of 170 runners at the USC Upstate Eye Opener last week. Brodmyer completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:22. Also Nominated: Sawyer Helms, Pfeiffer; Alex Topoly, Methodist; Philly Barungi, N.C. Wesleyan.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Cannon Powell, Pfeiffer - The freshman from Harrisburg, North Carolina placed 24th out of 75 runners at the Catawba Fleet Feet Invitational last week. Powell completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 28:34. Also Nominated: Gabe Sawyer, Methodist.



WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Maddie Merna, Meredith - The sophomore from Apex, North Carolina placed 30th out of 115 runners at the Elon Friday Night Lights Opener last week. Merna completed the 4,000-meter course in a new program record time of 14:40 which placed her as the top Division III runner at the meet. Also Nominated: Madison Lowery, Pfeiffer; Zoe Capps, Brevard.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Delaney Bundy, Meredith - The freshman from Cary, North Carolina placed 51st out of 115 runners at the Elon Friday Night Lights Opener last week. Bundy completed the 4,000-meter course in a time of 15:14. Also Nominated: Makayla Borst, Pfeiffer.
