USA South Announces 2024 Hall of Fame Class

The USA South Athletic Conference is pleased to announce its 2024 Hall of Fame Class. The five inductees, three former student-athletes, a former coach, and a former administrator, represent five different institutions. These individuals will be officially celebrated during a ceremony which will be scheduled at a later date.   • Hannah Shields Contreras was a four-year member of the Averett volleyball team from 2014-2017. Contreras was a three-time USA South Player of the Year and also added a Rookie of the Year accolade her first year in Danville. Contreras is the only player in USA South Volleyball history to earn three Player of the Year awards along with a Rookie of the Year honor. Additionally, she is just the third player in Conference volleyball history to be named Player of the Year three times. Contreras was a four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American and a four-time USA South All-Conference team member. She was named the Virginia Player of the Year twice as well as Rookie of the Year. Contreras helped the Cougars win three USA South regular season titles and was a League All-Tournament Team member on three occasions. She currently holds USA South records for career kills, kills per set, attempts, and sets played while also adding single-season and single-match records for attempts. Off the court, Contreras was a 2017 Academic All-American, a two-time Academic All-District selection, a three-time Virginia Academic All-State honoree, and a four-time member of the USA South Academic All-Conference team. Finally, Contreras was twice named Averett Female Student-Athlete of the Year and was recently inducted into the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame.

  • Misty Hart was a three-year member of the Christopher Newport women's basketball team from 1995-1998. Hart was twice named All-American, All-South Region, and Conference Player of the Year. She was a three-time First Team All-Conference member while leading the Captains to three regular season League titles and the 1998 Conference Tournament crown where she was named Most Valuable Player. During that tournament, Hart set the single-game Conference record for single game field goals attempted in a tournament contest (31). The Captains reached the NCAA Tournament thanks to the play of Hart as she currently ranks in the top-ten of several career CNU categories including points scored, scoring average, three-pointers made, free throw percentage, and assists per game. Finally, Hart was inducted into the Christopher Newport Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

  • Jackie Myers led the Meredith athletic department for 21 years and was a driving force in seeking a Conference home for the Avenging Angels. In the fall of 2007, Meredith began competition as a member of the USA South Athletic Conference. As League members, under the leadership of Myers, the Avenging Angels captured 39 Conference titles and appeared in 16 NCAA Tournaments. Myers helped grow the catalogue of athletic teams during her tenure as lacrosse, field hockey, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field came on board. With that, she was an integral part in building an outdoor turf complex which became the home for Meredith soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, and track & field. The addition of new gymnasium bleachers and indoor complex to help the experience of tennis, softball, and golf student-athletes were also projects which came to fruition while Myers was on the Raleigh campus. Myers served a term as chair of the USA South Athletic Directors committee and is currently a member of the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance's Advisory Board. This will be the second hall of fame for Myers as she is also a member of the Elon University Athletics Hall of Fame.

  • Mackenzie Puckett Taylor was a star on the Maryville women's basketball squad from 2012-2016. Taylor was a two-time USA South Player of the Year and also added a Rookie of the Year accolade as a freshman. Taylor was a three-time All-American, an All-South Region performer three times, and a four-time USA South All-Conference team member. In 2013, she was named to the Women's Division III News All-Freshman Team. Taylor helped the Scots capture four League regular season titles and one USA South Tournament championship where she earned Most Valuable Player honors. In each of her four seasons, Maryville reached the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet-16 when Taylor was a senior. Off the court, Taylor was a three-time member of the USA South Academic All-Conference team and a 2014-15 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic All-Region honoree. As a senior in 2016, Taylor was named the female USA South Don Scalf Award winner (now named the Rita Wiggs Award), which signified her as the USA South's Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Finally, Taylor was the recipient of Maryville's J.D. Davis Award, presented to College's top senior student-athlete.

  • Randy Tuggle was the head women's basketball coach at Greensboro for 11 seasons from 2009-2020 while also adding three years as women's golf head coach. On the basketball court, Tuggle is the all-time winningest coach in program history, amassing 196 wins which included a 134-53 (.716) Conference record. He led his team to four League regular season titles and the 2015 USA South Tournament championship. Tuggle was a two-time NCAA Tournament participant, leading the Pride to the Sweet-16 in 2011. That season, Tuggle earned USA South Coach of the Year as well as South Region Coach of the Year. During his time on the Greensboro campus, Tuggle coached 17 all-conference selections, two All-Americans, two USA South players of the year, and two USA South rookies of the year. In 2022 Tuggle was inducted into the Greensboro Athletics Hall of Fame. In September of 2020, Tuggle passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. The USA South launched a “Tuggle Strong” initiative during the 2019-20 season which raised thousands of dollars in Tuggle’s honor for cancer research thanks to the support of all League members and their admiration for Coach Tuggle.
