USA South Athletes of the Week - Dec. 19, 2016

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Donavan Griffith, Greensboro - The senior forward form Greensboro, North Carolina averaged a double-double of 18.5 points and 14.0 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Pride. Griffith tallied double-doubles in each of the two contests and also added 4.5 assists, 3.5 steals and 2.5 blocks per game. In a 76-71 loss at Mt. St. Mary (NY), Griffith totaled 17 points, ten rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. In a 95-87 victory over Mt. St. Vincent, Griffith contributed 20 points, 18 rebounds, five assists, five steals and three blocks. Also Nominated: Charles Bryant, Averett; Josh Dudley, Ferrum; Rae Hall, Methodist; Peyton Luken, Piedmont.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Jay Hicks, William Peace - The Cary, North Carolina freshman forward averaged 12.5 points and 2.0 rebounds per game as the Pacers posted a 1-1 record last week. In an 86-74 loss to Hampden-Sydney, Hicks totaled 13 points and one rebound. In a 103-74 victory over USA South foe Piedmont, Hicks tallied 12 points, three rebounds and one assist. Also Nominated: Taj Thompson, Averett.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Brianna Barrett, Piedmont The Cornelia, Georgia senior guard averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game last week as the Lions posted a 2-0 record. In an 84-79 win over Johnson & Wales (NC), Barrett totaled 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists without a turnover. In a 68-60 victory over Ferrum,  Barrett contributed 14 points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds. Also Nominated: Emma Grimes, Covenant; Lauren Biliter, Maryville; Zarkia Mattox, Ferrum; Samm Chandler, Averett; Juliette Harp, Huntingdon. 

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Brooke Carthon, Averett - The Atlanta, Georgia freshman guard averaged 8.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week for the Cougars. In a 56-53 victory over Shenandoah, Carthon totaled 13 points, four rebounds and one steal. In a 68-49 loss to Maryville, Carthon contributed four points, three rebounds and two steals. Also Nominated: Maia Hill, Huntingdon.
