USA South Golf Athletes of the Week - Oct. 16, 2019

MEN'S GOLF

Men's Golfer of the Week
Drew Mathers, Huntingdon - The senior from Mobile, Alabama placed second out of 88 golfers at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational last week by shooting a 12-under par 204. In the three-round event, Mathers opened with an even-par 72, followed with a four-under par 68 and finished with an eight-under par 64 to help the Hawks to a second place team finish. Also Nominated: Elias Haavisto, Averett; Andre Chi, Methodist; Matthew Leemann, Piedmont; Scott Campbell, Greensboro.

Men's Golf Rookie of the Week
Elias Haavisto, Averett - The freshman from Kotka, Finland placed first out of 93 golfers at the Virginia State Golf Association Intercollegiate last week by shooting an eight-under par 136. In the two-round event, Haavisto opened with a five-under par 67 and finished with a three-under par 69 to help the Cougars third place tie team finish. Also Nominated: Cameron Cappuzzo, Methodist; Fred Roberts, Piedmont.

 

WOMEN'S GOLF

Women's Golfer of the Week
Jillian Drinkard, Methodist - The sophomore from Appomattox, Virginia placed tied for sixth out of 95 golfers at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational in a field that included nine teams from the WGCA Top-25 by shooting a 12-over par 228. In the three-round event, Drinkard opened with a four-over par 76, followed with a three-over par 75 and finished with a five-over par 77 to help the Monarchs to a second place tie team finish. Also Nominated: Samantha Bearden, Piedmont; Debra Ann Burdeshaw, Huntingdon.

Women's Golf Rookie of the Week
Emma Cox, Huntingdon - The freshman from Dothan, Alabama placed tied 83rd out of 95 golfers at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational in a field that included nine teams from the WGCA Top-25 by shooting a 45-over par 261. In the three-round event, Cox opened with a 21-over par 93, followed with a 14-over par 86 and finished with a ten-over par 82 to help the Hawks to a 16th place tie team finish. Also Nominated: Sarah Wallace, Meredith.
