USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 28, 2019

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Bunch, Maryville - The sophomore running back from Bean Station, Tennessee tied a single-game program record with four rushing touchdowns in a 28-10 win over USA South foe LaGrange last week. Bunch carried the ball 27 times for 171 yards and was responsible for every Scot touchdown, leading his team to victory from an early 10-0 deficit. Also Nominated: Brandon Bullins, Methodist; Dalton Cole, Brevard; Otis Porter, Huntingdon; Tyler Roberts, N.C. Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Brandon Bullins, Methodist - The freshman quarterback from Kernersville, North Carolina tossed four touchdowns, the most from a Methodist quarterback since 2014, in a 41-10 in over USA South foe Greensboro last week. Bullins was 19-of-26 passing for 196 yards with one interception for a passing efficiency rating of 179.5. Also Nominated: Sebastian Verger, Huntingdon.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Peyton DeFleron, Huntingdon
 - The Slocomb, Alabama junior defensive back totaled a ten tackles and grabbed an interception late in the fourth quarter to help the Hawks fend off USA South rival Averett, 41-35 last week. DeFleron had seven solo tackles, which included a sack, and three assisted takedowns. His interception was at the Huntingdon 33-yard line with 2:15 to play in the game to help preserve the Hawks' six-point lead. Also Nominated: Roderic Christian Jr, Methodist; JaCorey Jackson, Maryville; Antonio Johnson, N.C. Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Rook Tate, Brevard - The freshman defensive back from Gaffney, South Carolina returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown in a 26-20 win over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan last week. Tate's interception came late in the first half and gave the Tornados a 19-0 lead at the time. He also added five total tackles, four of which were solo, in the victory. Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Bobby Haggerty, Methodist - The junior punter from Raleigh, North Carolina punted twice which both landing inside the 20-yard line in a 41-10 victory over USA South foe Greensboro last week. Haggerty's two punts went an average distance of 51.5 yards and forced the Pride to begin drives at the 14 and seven yard lines. Also Nominated: Ian Hubbs, Maryville; Zach Johnson, Huntingdon; Cole Westberry, Averett.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Josh Brower, Covenant - The senior forward/midfielder from Birmingham, Alabama tallied three goals and one assist in a 3-0 week for the Scots against USA South competition as Covenant finished off an unblemished (13-0-0) League record and captured the West Division title. In a 2-0 win over Brevard, Brower was in on both Scot goals as he assisted on the first and scored the second. In a 3-2, overtime, win at Greensboro, Brower scored in the 82nd minute to tie the game. Finally, in a 2-1 victory over William Peace, Brower scored Covenant's first goal in the 12th minute. Also Nominated: Matteo Costa, N.C. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Jack Holden, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior defender from Doncaster, England came up from the back for a corner kick and scored his first-career goal, which proved to be the game-winner, in a 2-1 victory over USA South rival Methodist in the team's only contest of last week. Holden also helped the Battling Bishop defense hold the Monarchs to just one shot during the game. Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Blake Webb, LaGrange - The freshman midfielder from Zebulon, Georgia tallied two assists in a 4-3 win over USA South foe Pfeiffer in the only contest for the Panthers last week. Webb's first helper gave LaGrange a 3-0 lead while his second assist proved to be on the eventual game-winning goal in the 66th minute. Also Nominated: Lucas Campos, Brevard; Cole Hupp, Methodist; Nico Soriano, Pfeiffer.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Meredith Manson, Pfeiffer - The Auburndale, Florida junior defender scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over USA South foe Greensboro, which clinched the first team championship in any sport for Pfeiffer since joining the Conference. The Falcons captured the Eastern Division title thanks to Manson tallying the game's lone goal in the 22nd minute as she came up from the back for a corner kick. The victory was Pfeiffer's lone game of last week. Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Kaley Hyatt, Pfeiffer - The St. Cloud, Florida senior goalkeeper stopped all four shots she faced to earn a shutout in Pfeiffer's, 1-0, win over USA South foe Greensboro, which clinched the first team championship in any sport for Pfeiffer since joining the Conference. The Falcons captured the Eastern Division title thanks to Hyatt tallying her fourth shutout of the season. Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Myah Johnson, Agnes Scott - The Pepperell, Massachusetts first-year forward scored four goals as the Scotties posted a 1-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 4-1 loss to Huntingdon, Johnson scored her team's only goal. In a 6-2 victory over Berea, Johnson notched her second hat trick of the season as she scored three goals, including the eventual game-winner. Also Nominated: Jordan Alexis, LaGrange; Kyra Delaney, William Peace; Macy Lindsey, Maryville; Lucy Sandhoff, Covenant; Mia Slaunwhite, Meredith.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Amy Tyna, Huntingdon - The junior middle hitter from Cleveland, Ohio averaged 5.50 kills, with a .423 hitting percentage, 5.90 digs and 1.00 service aces per set and tallied three double-doubles as the Hawks posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Pensacola Christian, Tyna totaled 20 kills, 28 digs, six service aces and two blocks. In a 3-0 victory over USA South foe Brevard, Tyna posted 18 kills, 16 digs and four service aces. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over USA South rival Piedmont, Tyna tallied 17 kills and 15 digs. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Bergin Gillespie, William Peace - The junior defensive specialist from Dumfries, Virginia averaged 6.00 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-1 win over Pfeiffer, Gillespie totaled 20 digs, three assists and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over Averett, Gillespie posted 28 digs, two assists, two service aces and one kill. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Lauren Montren, Averett - The freshman outside hitter from Creedmoor, North Carolina averaged 4.00 kills and 4.27 digs per set and tallied three double-doubles as the Cougars posted a 3-1 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-2 win over Salem, Montren notched 13 kills, 18 digs and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Mary Baldwin, Montren posted 12 kills, 14 digs, three service aces and one assist.
