USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 16, 2019

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Bunch, Maryville - The sophomore running back from Bean Station, Texas rushed for 177 yards with one touchdown in a 27-22 loss at 18th ranked Centre last week. Bunch carried the ball 15 times for an average of 11.8 yards per attempt. His touchdown run came in the second quarter and opened up a 16-0 lead for the Scots. Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Kris Hawkins, Maryville - The freshman running back from Dandridge, Tennessee rushed for 88 yards in a 27-22 loss at 18th ranked Centre last week. Hawkins carried the ball seven times for an average of 12.6 yards per attempt. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Nate Jones, Methodist
 - The Sanford, North Carolina junior safety recorded 12 total tackles and grabbed two interceptions in a 19-14 loss to Guilford last week. Both of Jones' interceptions came inside the Monarchs own ten yard line, helping keep the opponent off the scoreboard. Jones totaled seven solo tackles and five assisted take downs including an assisted sack for a loss of five yards and one pass breakup. Also Nominated: Kaseem Bagley, Greensboro; Terrell England, Averett; Bo Hering, Maryville; Isaiah Williams, N.C. Wesleyan.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Andrew Bradshaw, Methodist - The freshman defensive lineman totaled seven tackles, including three for a loss of ten total yards in a 19-14 loss to Guilford last week. All three of Bradshaw's tackles for a loss were on third-down stops. Also Nominated: Tristen Rose, Greensboro.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Ian Hubbs, Maryville - The senior place kicker and punter from Palm Coast, Florida made all three of his field goals and one of his two extra points in a 27-22 loss at 18th ranked Centre last week. Hubbs was accurate on field goals from 38, 36 and 44 yards. His 44-yarder brought the Scots to within six points of Centre in the fourth quarter. He also punted six times for an average of 33.2 including one which pinned the opponent inside the 20 yard line. MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Kai Miettinen, Maryville - The senior midfielder from Knoxville, Tennessee tallied three goals in a 2-0 week for the Scots versus USA South competition. In a 2-0 win over Mary Baldwin, Miettinen scored an insurance goal in the 44th minute. In a 4-0 victory over Averett, Miettinen opened the scoring with the eventual game-winning goal in the 31st minute then following that up with another tally two minutes later. Also Nominated: Caleb Bratager, Pfeiffer; Jovan Cotton, Greensboro; Cameron Earls, Piedmont; Johnny Kummander, Averett; Baboucarr Nije, N.C. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Cameron Verona, Piedmont - The junior goalkeeper from Waleska, Georgia earned a shutout victory in a 4-0 win over USA South foe Pfeiffer in the Lions' only contest last week. Verona played the full 90 minutes and recorded four saves. Also Nominated: Tobias Borzel, N.C. Wesleyan; Colton Dutchess, Averett; Cole Hupp, Methodist; Mykal Manfred, Maryville; Alexander Sargeant, Greensboro; Lucas Wright, LaGrange.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Mykal Manfred, Maryville - The freshman goalkeeper from Gallatin, Tennessee posted a 2-0 record for the Scots last week versus USA South competition. In 172 total minutes in goal, Manfred stopped all six shots he faced. In a 2-0 win over Mary Baldwin, Manfred played all 90 minutes to record a shutout with three saves. In a 4-0 victory over Averett, Manfred stopped all three shots he faced. Also Nominated: Jovan Cotton, Greensboro; Diego Moran, Pfeiffer; Blake Webb, LaGrange; Sebastian Widen, Averett; Hudson Zeisman, Methodist.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Mercedes Bauza, Greensboro - The Mebane, North Carolina senior forward tallied two goals and one assist in a 5-0 win over Marymount in the Pride's only contest last week. Bauza scored the team's second and fifth goals of the match while assisting on the third. Also Nominated: Sydney Dailey, LaGrange; Miranda Gay, Methodist; Reid Johnson, Piedmont; Madison Morin, Averett; Glendy Pineda, Berea; Shannon Reagan, Maryville; Dayanna Riera, Pfeiffer.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Miranda McNalley, Piedmont - The Atlanta, Georgia junior goalkeeper posted a 2-1 record last week for the Lions. In 225 minutes in goal, McNalley stopped seven out of the eight shots she faced and posted one shutout. In a 5-0 win over USA South foe Wesleyan, McNalley played the first 45 minutes and made one save. In a 1-0 victory over Mt. St. Joseph, McNalley, thanks to her defense, did not face a shot on goal. Finally, in a 1-0 loss to 14th ranked Lynchburg, McNalley kept the Lions in the game by stopping six shots. Also Nominated: Keeley Catarineau, Greensboro; Kaley Hyatt, Pfeiffer; Rebeccah Rojas, Brevard; Emma Smith, LaGrange; Hannah Wagner, Salem; Maggie Wilson, Maryville.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Reid Johnson, Piedmont - The Jacksonville, Florida freshman forward tallied three goals in a 2-1 week for the Lions. In a 5-0 win over USA South foe Wesleyan, Johnson scored the first two goals of her career. In a 1-0 victory over Mt. St. Joseph, Johnson scored the only goal of the match, thus the game-winner, in the 71st minute. Finally, in a 1-0 loss to 14th ranked Lynchburg, Johnson was held scoreless with one shot. Also Nominated: Phoebe Deering, Maryville; Allison Fisher, Huntingdon; Laura Harris, Methodist; Myah Johnson, Agnes Scott; Brianna Link, Brevard; Madison Morin, Averett; Haley Russell, Greensboro.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Mya Parks, William Peace - The senior outside hitter from LaGrange, North Carolina posted three double-doubles and averaged 4.75 kills, with a hitting percentage of .290, and 3.58 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Salem, Parks tallied ten kills, 15 digs, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-2 victory over Guilford, Parks notched 24 kills, 17 digs, two assists and two blocks. Finally, in a 3-1 victory over Maryville, Parks totaled 23 kills, 11 digs, two assists and two service aces. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Lauren Phillips, Meredith - The junior defensive specialist from Greenville, North Carolina averaged 8.25 digs and 1.50 assists per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 1-2 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Emory & Henry, Phillips totaled 21 digs, four assists and two service aces. In a 3-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall, Philips appeared in just one set with 15 digs, three assists and one service ace. Finally, in a 3-1 loss to Marymount, Phillips contributed 30 digs and five assists. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Lauren Montren, Averett - The freshman outside hitter from Creedmoor, North Carolina averaged 3.56 kills, with a hitting percentage of .286, and 4.67 digs per set as the Cougars posted a 2-0 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Piedmont, Montren tallied nine kills, 19 digs and one block. In a 3-2 victory over Reinhardt, Montren notched a double-double of 23 kills and 23 digs to go along with two service aces.
