USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 23, 2019

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Jacob Wright, Averett - The senior quarterback from Tallahassee, Florida accounted for four touchdowns in a 35-12 win over Ferrum last week. Wright was 16-for-23 passing with a career-high 234 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also carried the ball nine times for 43 yards and two scores. Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Jamaar Moore, Methodist - The freshman wide receiver from Rock Hill, South Carolina caught six passes for 93 yards with one touchdown in a 30-14 win over Catholic last week. Moore's totals were all game-highs for the Monarchs. Also Nominated: Gerald Hines, Brevard; Bryce Jackson, Averett.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Conner Showalter, Averett
 - The Cameron, North Carolina senior linebacker recorded seven total tackles, 1.5 for a loss, with two interceptions in a 35-12 win over Ferrum last week. Both of Showalter's interceptions came inside Averett territory, stopping potential scoring drives in their tracks. Also Nominated: Gerrod Nobles, Methodist; Steffon Canady, Brevard.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Taj Outten, Methodist - The freshman linebacker from Fort Myers, Florida totaled ten tackles in a 30-14 win over Catholic last week. Outten collected three solo tackles and seven assisted take downs in the victory. Also Nominated: Johnathan Terrell, Averett; Antonio Williams Jr., Brevard.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Cole Westberry, Averett - The senior place kicker/punter from Youngsville, North Carolina averaged 50.3 yards per punt and was a perfect 5-for-5 on point-after-touchdowns in a 35-12 win over Ferrum last week. Westberry had a long punt of 51 yards while one of his three kicks was placed inside the 20 yard line. Also Nominated: Bobby Haggerty, Methodist; Jaxon Youngblood, Brevard.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Jordy Briceno, Greensboro - The junior forward from Cali, Colombia tallied three goals and two assists in a 2-0 week for the Pride against USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Pfeiffer, Briceno assisted on two scores, the first being the eventual game-winning goal. In a 7-0 win over Berea, Briceno notched a hat trick with three unassisted goals. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Noah Lee, Covenant - The junior defender from Augusta, Georgia was the anchor along the Scots' back line as the team posted three shutouts in a 3-0 week against USA South competition. Lee played more minutes than any other defensive player, including goalkeepers, as the Scots held Berea, Piedmont and Pfeiffer to a combined 14 total shots. Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Lucas Wright, LaGrange - The freshman goalkeeper from Bremen, Georgia posted a 1-0-1 record last week for the Panthers against USA South competition. In 200 minutes in goal, Wright stopped 15 out of 17 shots he faced. In a 3-1 win over Averett, Wright made four saves while in a 1-1, double overtime tie with William Peace, Wright stopped a career-high 11 shots. Also Nominated: Mykal Manfred, Maryville; Carr Panetta, Mary Baldwin; Jay Patterson, Covenant; Lucas Campos, Brevard.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Sydney Dailey, LaGrange - The Carrollton, Georgia sophomore midfielder tallied two goals and two assists in a 2-0 week for the Panthers. In a 4-0 win over Talladega, Dailey notched two goals, including the eventual game-winner, and one assist. In a 4-0 victory over Mary Baldwin, Dailey assisted on the second score of the game. Also Nominated: Kailey Burrell, Covenant; Hannah Clothier, Maryville; Cayci Eaton, Pfeiffer; Ellie Montes, Salem; Katelyn Smith, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Hannah Wagner, Salem - The Wilmington, North Carolina senior goalkeeper posted a 2-0-1 record last week for the Spirits. In 290 minutes in goal, Wagner stopped 16 out of 17 shots she faced and posted two shutouts. In a 1-0 win over Brevard, Wagner stopped all three shots faced. In a 2-0 victory over Emory & Henry, Wagner collected six saves. Finally, in a 1-1, double overtime tie with Ferrum, Wagner made seven saves. Also Nominated: Kelly Allen, Maryville; Morgan Cecil, Pfeiffer; Rebeccah Rojas, Brevard; Lucy Sandhoff, Covenant; Emma Smith, LaGrange; Katelyn Smith, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Lucy Sandhoff, Covenant - The Lookout Mountain, Georgia freshman goalkeeper posted a shutout in a 3-0 victory over Berry, the team's only action of last week. Sandhoff recorded her first career win, posting nine saves. Also Nominated: Madison Morin, Averett; Patricia Summers, Pfeiffer; Maurie White, LaGrange.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Amy Tyma, Huntingdon - The junior middle hitter from Cleveland, Ohio averaged 4.05 kills and 3.74 digs per set as the Hawks posted a 3-2 record last week. In a 3-2 loss to Albany State, Tyma had a double-double of 19 kills and 13 digs. In a 3-1 loss to North Greenville, Tyma tallied ten kills, seven digs and two blocks. In a 3-0 victory over Pensacola Christian, Tyma notched a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs with one service ace and one block. In a 3-0 win over Mississippi University for Women, Tyma posted a double-double of 14 kills and 20 digs with one block. Finally, in a 3-1 victory over Oglethorpe, Tyma tallied a double-double of 22 kills and 15 digs with two service aces and one block. Also Nominated: Megan Andrews, Methodist; Sydney Barnwell, N.C. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Natalie Watts, Maryville - The freshman libero from Alabaster, Alabama averaged 6.57 digs per set as the Scots posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Johnson University, Watts played just one set and totaled six digs with three service aces. In a 3-0 victory over Averett, Watts posted 22 digs and two service aces. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Bridgewater, Watts contributed 18 digs and five assists. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Hailey Long, Meredith - The freshman right side hitter from Roxboro, North Carolina averaged 3.60 kills per set as the Avenging Angels defeated Roanoke, 3-2, in their only match last week. Long also contributed three digs, three blocks and one service ace in the win. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Tanner Carson, Berea - The senior from McCreary, Kentucky placed first out of 79 runners at the Berea College Mike and Mary Kay Invitational two weeks ago. Carson completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 25:30 helping the Mountaineers to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Gavin Morgan, Brevard; Gary Halverson, Piedmont; Chandler Lowell, Averett; Brendan Yeager, Covenant; Andrew Topoly, Methodist; Bryan Storie, LaGrange; Andrew Bowen, N.C. Wesleyan. 

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Brendan Yeager, Covenant - The freshman from Ballwin, Missouri placed 19th out of 142 runners at the Wingfoot Cross Country Classic last week. Yeager completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:30 helping the Scots to a fifth place team finish. Also Nominated: Luke Wilson, Berea; Gary Halverson, Piedmont; Chandler Lowell, Averett; Andrew Topoly, Methodist; Philly Barungi, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Lilly Simms, Maryville - The sophomore, competing in collegiate cross country for the first time, from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, placed third out of 90 runners at the Berea College Mike and Mary Kay Invitational two weeks ago. Simms completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19:40, helping the Scots to a fifth place team finish. Also Nominated: Jamie Welch, Berea; Val Angel, Piedmont; Julie Tonon, Meredith; Sydney Fryman, Averett; S.K. Lipperd, Covenant; Courtney Drumm, Methodist; Brianna Parker, Mary Baldwin; Jessica Bailey, Salem; Holly Moreland, LaGrange; Tyler Walker, Wesleyan; Cedera Franklin, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
