MEN'S BASKETBALL (considering games from 1/3/22-1/16/22)

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Corey Baldwin, Averett - The junior guard from Henderson, North Carolina led the Cougars to two of its three wins last week by averaging 22.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. In a 68-58 win over William Peace, Baldwin notched a double-double of 19 points and ten rebounds to go along with one assist and one steal. In a 75-56 victory over N.C. Wesleyan, Baldwin scored a career-high 25 points with eight rebounds, and three blocks. Baldwin did not see any action in a 64-61 win over Mary Baldwin. Also Nominated: Sal-Bey Young, N.C. Wesleyan; Elliot Spencer, Southern Virginia; Jekobe Coleman, Maryville; Quincy Carter, Brevard.

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Elliot Spencer, Southern Virginia - The freshman guard from Bountiful, Utah averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals as the Knights posted a 1-1 record the past two weeks. In a 74-58 loss to Catholic, Spencer totaled seven points, five rebounds, and three steals. In a 77-60 victory over William Peace, Spencer scored a career-high 23 points with five rebounds and three steals. Also Nominated: Jem Lowrance, Averett; Kaleb Powell, Maryville; Garrett Sutherland, Brevard.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Jalen Gathers, Mary Baldwin - The junior guard from Richmond, Virginia led the Fighting Squirrels to an 87-59 win over Pfeiffer in the team's only contest last week by notching a double-double with game-highs of 22 points and 16 rebounds. Gathers also added four assists and three steals in the victory. Also Nominated: Kayla Johnson, N.C. Wesleyan; Jessica Drake, Methodist; Aaliyah Hampton, Berea; Quadijah Moore, Greensboro; Gracie Brunel, LaGrange; Courtney Hunt, Averett; Tyler Davenport, Salem; Savanna Christensen, Southern Virginia; Ty'She Washington, Brevard.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Kiley Hicks, Methodist - The freshman forward from Wylie, Texas averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.3 assists as the Monarchs posted a 1-2 record last week. Hicks' best game was in a loss to Greensboro as she scored a game-high 18 points with seven rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Also Nominated: Dailyn Spalding, Berea; Jaa Brown, Averett; Tamsi Echendu, Salem.
