USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 12, 2022

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Kahari McReynolds, Huntingdon - The junior running back from Geneva, Alabama ran for three touchdowns and 210 yards as the Hawks defeated Birmingham Southern, 38-35, last week. McReynolds carried the ball 24 times for an average of 8.8 yards per attempt. McReynolds also caught one pass for nine yards. Also Nominated: Kolbe Blunt, Belhaven; Brandon Bullins, Methodist.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Ryan Steele, Methodist - The freshman tight end from Richmond Hill, Georgia caught his first career touchdown in a 49-16 win over Guilford last week. Steele caught two passes for 13 total yards. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Carlton Brown, Belhaven
- The Memphis, Tennessee junior defensive lineman set new program single-game records with six tackles for loss, which included four sacks, in a 42-15 victory over Southwestern last week. Brown totaled 11 tackles, nine of which were solo, while his tackles for loss set back the opposing offense 29 yards. He also added a pass breakup and a blocked field goal to his day. Also Nominated: Max Steele, Greensboro; Devon White, Maryville; Isiah McMullens, Methodist; Eli Everhart, Brevard.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Landry Huddleston, Belhaven - The freshman defensive back from Irvington, Alabama totaled four solo tackles with one sack in a 42-15 win over Southwestern. Huddleston's sack resulted in a loss of 11 yards. Also Nominated: Obadiah Grimes, Brevard.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Zach Johnson, Huntingdon - The senior punter from Phenix City, Alabama averaged 42.0 yards per attempt in a 38-35 victory over Birmingham Southern last week. Johnson was called on six times, placed one punt inside the 20 yard line, had two fair caught, and had a long effort of 53 yards. MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Jorge Aguilar, William Peace - The Santa Rose de Copan, Honduras senior midfielder scored one goal with two assists in a 1-0-2 week for the Pacers. In a 2-2 tie with Bridgewater, Aguilar assisted on the team's first goal of the match. In a scoreless draw with Guilford, Aguilar had two shots. Finally, in a 4-2 win over Averett, Aguilar scored the team's second goal in the 32nd minute then assisted on the eventual game-winner in the 40th minute. Also Nominated: Kether Fouana-Seth, Methodist; Tanner Gonder, Southern Virginia; Ryan Lynch, Brevard; Tommaso Illario, N.C. Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
Tripp Kidd, William Peace - The Swansboro, North Carolina junior goalkeeper allowed four goals and stopped 13 shots in 270 minutes played last week. Kidd posted a 1-0-2 record last week which included a scoreless shutout with three saves against Guilford. Also Nominated: Matthew Walker, Methodist; Samuel Jaggi, Southern Virginia; Igor da Silva, Brevard; Mika Lommers, N.C. Wesleyan; Alexander Sargeant, Greensboro.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Matthew Walker, Methodist - The Apex, North Carolina freshman goalkeeper posted his first career win and shutout, a 2-0 victory over Trinity Baptist, in his only appearance for the Monarchs last week. Walker stopped both shots he faced in the win. Also Nominated: Abdul Qurneh, William Peace; Kenyon Grange, Southern Virginia; Leho Louarn, N.C. Wesleyan; Jordan Shutt, Greensboro.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Abby Mayer, Brevard - The Roxboro, North Carolina junior forward totaled six goals with two assists in a 2-0 week for the Tornados. In a 4-0 win over Warren Wilson, Mayer was involved in all four scores as she netted a hat trick of three goals and added one assist. In a 6-0 victory over Allen, Mayer notched her second hat trick of the week with three more scores with another assist. Also Nominated: Kayla Blankenship, Pfeiffer; Ashley Linden, Salem; Svea Eckstrand, Greensboro; Makinna Winterton, Southern Virginia; Abby Mayer, Brevard.

Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
Jordan Tomberlin, Salem - The Merritt Island, Florida senior goalkeeper posted a 2-1 record last week for the Spirits. In 208 minutes played, Tomberlin allowed two goals, one of which was an own-goal, while making 15 saves. In a 3-0 victory over Johnson & Wales, Tomberlin produced 80 minutes of shutout soccer while stopping all 11 shots faced. Salem has now matched the 2009, 2014, and 2016 squads with three shutouts in the first four matches. Also Nominated: Julia Howland, Greensboro; Alyssa Trueman, Southern Virginia; Abbie Worsencroft, Brevard; Makaela Stokes, N.C. Wesleyan.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Darilyn Nieto, Salem - The Greensboro, North Carolina first-year totaled four goals with one assist in a 2-1 week for the Spirits. In an 8-0 win over Sweet Briar, Nieto became the 18th player in Salem history to net a hat trick with three goals. In a 2-1 loss to Averett, Nieto was held scoreless with four shots. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Johnson & Wales, Nieto scored once with one assist. Also Nominated: Emma LaFave, Pfeiffer; Sofia Pagnamenta, Greensboro; Mikayla Zvekan, Brevard; Eden Whiteside, N.C. Wesleyan.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Mackenzie Russell, William Peace - The junior setter from Sparta, North Carolina averaged 10.88 assists and 3.29 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 5-0 record last week with wins over Guilford, Pfeiffer, Berea, Maryville, and Lynchburg. Russell notched two double-doubles while her match-highs included 46 assists, 20 digs, two kills, two service aces (three times), and two blocks. Also Nominated: Madison Honeycutt, Pfeiffer; Anna Rymer, Salem; Jaylyn Templeton, Greensboro; Emma Steiger, Southern Virginia; Geneva Barriger, Methodist; Kaitlyn Pressley, Brevard.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Logan Moore, William Peace - The senior defensive specialist from Jacksonville, North Carolina averaged 4.71 digs per set as the Pacers posted a 5-0 record last week with wins over Guilford, Pfeiffer, Berea, Maryville, and Lynchburg. Moore's match-highs included 22 digs, seven assists, five service aces, and three kills. Also Nominated: Aniyah Tate, Methodist; Macy Nelson, Salem; Lauren Kunke, Greensboro; Jilane Pederson, Southern Virginia; Bailey Lance, Brevard; Barrett Davis, N.C. Wesleyan.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Aspen Bradley, Salem - The first-year from Redmond, Oregon averaged 3.32 kills with a .367 hitting percentage as the Spirits posted a 5-1 record last week gaining wins over Johnson & Wales, Randolph (twice), N.C. Wesleyan, and Hollins with a loss to Roanoke. Bradley posted match-highs of 16 kills (twice), three digs, three blocks (twice), and one assist. Also Nominated: Carrie Jordan, Methodist; Madison Tate, Pfeiffer; Taylor Cotie, Greensboro; Ashley Torbeson, Southern Virginia; Blair Nance, Brevard.
