USA South Athletes of the Week - Sept. 19, 2022

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Shedrick Lindsey, LaGrange - The senior quarterback from Griffin, Georgia threw for three touchdowns in a 44-38 win over Ferrum last week. Lindsey was 18-of-35 for 220 yards passing, averaging 6.3 yards per attempt. Lindsey's 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter put the Panthers on the board and was his longest completion of the day. Also Nominated: Rodney Scott Jr., Greensboro; Jaden O'Leary, Brevard.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Bryson Rollins, Maryville - The freshman quarterback from Elizabethton, Tennessee accounted for four touchdowns, three passing and one rushing, in a 34-29 loss to Shenandoah last week. Through the air, Rollins was 27-of-40 for 340 yards without an interception and ran 15 times for 27 yards. Rollins helped the Scots score 22 consecutive second half points to take a late lead which could not be held in the final minute. Also Nominated: None.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Casey Peppers, Huntingdon
 - The Panama City Beach, Florida senior linebacker totaled nine tackles, including four sacks, in a 47-7 victory over Guilford last week. Peppers totaled seven solo tackles and two assisted take downs. His four sacks resulted in a total loss of 26 yards. Also Nominated: Isaiah Screen, LaGrange; JaJuan Givens, Greensboro; Toby Naylor, Brevard.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Renardo Faust, LaGrange - The freshman linebacker from Athens, Georgia returned an interception for a touchdown in the third quarter of a 44-38 win over Ferrum last week. The score capped a 21-point scoring run for the Panthers and produced the largest lead of the game. Faust also added two solo tackles and a fumble recovery. Also Nominated: Tyler Clyburn, Greensboro.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
James Woods, Brevard - The sophomore defensive back from Lincolnton, North Carolina blocked and returned a punt for a touchdown in a 23-6 loss to Averett last week. The score, which came in the fourth quarter, could have made it a one-score game if the ensuing two-point play was converted. Also Nominated: Alex Rivera, LaGrange; Kobe Praylow, Methodist.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Ryan Lynch, Brevard - The Charlotte, North Carolina junior forward scored two goals with one assist last week as the Tornados posted a 2-0 record. All of Lynch's scoring last week came in a 3-2 win over Warren Wilson, which included an assist on the game-winning goal in the 44th minute. In a 1-0 win over Centre, Lynch managed two shots. Also Nominated: Parker Spesock, Greensboro; Nigel Johnson, Pfeiffer; Fred Rogers, N.C. Wesleyan; Alexis Barba, Mary Baldwin.

Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
Justin Almond, Mary Baldwin - The Chesterfield, Virginia senior goalkeeper pitched a shutout in his only appearance for the Fighting Squirrels last week, a 1-0 victory over Ferrum. Almond stopped all seven shots he faced to post his first shutout of the season. Also Nominated: Lee Carrico, Greensboro; Fred Rogers, N.C. Wesleyan; Matheus Rossi, Brevard; Matthew Walker, Methodist.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Tucker Speak, Mary Baldwin - The Herndon, Virginia freshman goalkeeper posted his first career shutout in his only appearance for the Fighting Squirrels last week, a scoreless draw with Bridgewater. Speak stopped all ten shots he faced in the tie. Also Nominated: Juan Ramirez, Greensboro; Lucas Marangos, N.C. Wesleyan; Harrison Broome, Methodist.

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Laura Harris, Methodist - The Greensboro, North Carolina senior forward totaled four goals with one assist in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs. In a 6-0 win over Johnson & Wales, Harris scored twice, including the eventual game-winning goal in the fourth minute. In a 5-0 victory over Bob Jones, Harris again tallied two goals while adding an assist. Also Nominated: Morgan Romney, Southern Virginia; Darilyn Nieto, Salem; Jamayia Brown, Greensboro; Kyra Delaney, William Peace; Abby Mayer, Brevard; Brenna Kehoe, Mary Baldwin.

Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
Sofia Pagnamenta, Greensboro - The Woodbury, Connecticut freshman goalkeeper appeared in three games and in 200 minutes played allowed three goals while making 23 saves last week for the Pride. In a 2-0 loss to Bridgewater, Pagnamenta made ten saves in 65 minutes played. In just one half of a 3-0 loss to Randolph-Macon, Pagnamenta stopped eight shots. Finally, in a 1-0 victory over Averett, Pagnamenta posted her first-career shutout by making five saves. Also Nominated: Alyssa Trueman, Southern Virginia; Alexcina Wartski, Salem; Emma White, Brevard.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Darilyn Nieto, Salem - The Greensboro, North Carolina first-year totaled four goals in a 1-2 week for the Spirits. Salem and Nieto were held scoreless in two one-goal losses with Nieto managing four shots. In a 4-1 win over Agnes Scott, Nieto scored all four of the team's goals, including the eventual game-winner in the 23rd minute. Nieto is just the third player in program history to record at least four goals in a single match. Also Nominated: Jamayia Brown, Greensboro; Morgan Romney, Southern Virginia; Nivia King, William Peace; Mikayla Zvekan, Brevard; Vanessa Alfaro-Young, Mary Baldwin.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball Player of the Week
Courtney Pinkston, Southern Virginia - The junior outside hitter from Gilbert, Arizona averaged 4.38 kills 2.50 digs per set as the Knights posted a 2-0 record last week with wins over Shenandoah and Bridgewater. Pinkston notched one double-double while her match-highs included 18 kills, 14 digs, three service aces, one assist, and one block (twice). Also Nominated: Taylor Cotie, Greensboro; Mattie Hinson, Pfeiffer; Valeria Rosa Lopez, Salem; Kaitlyn Pressley, Brevard; Lauren Bissette, Meredith.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Ella Brameus, Salem - The first-year outside hitter from Chicago, Illinois averaged 4.82 digs per set as the Spirits posted a 1-2 record last week with a win over Ferrum and losses to Bob Jones and Huntingdon. Brameus' personal match-highs included 23 digs, six kills, two assists, and one service ace. Also Nominated: Emma Steiger, Southern Virginia; Lauren Mantel, Greensboro; Hannah Jo Jablonski, Meredith.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Lillie Davis, Meredith - The freshman setter from Roxboro, North Carolina averaged 8.75 assists and 2.38 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 2-0 record last week gaining wins over St. Andrews and Guilford. Davis posted one double-double while her personal match-highs included 38 assists, 11 digs, three kills, and one service ace (twice). Also Nominated: McKenzie Tullock, Salem; Taylor Cotie, Greensboro; Emily Foraker, N.C. Wesleyan; Blair Nance, Brevard; Leah Sherrill, Mary Baldwin; Mahala Carter, Methodist.

 

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Dylan May, Southern Virginia - The sophomore from Missuola, Montana placed sixth out of 166 runners at the Christopher Newport NCAA Regional Preview last week. May completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:48. Also Nominated: Devon Brodmyer, Brevard; Drew Topoly, Methodist.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Carter Johnson, Southern Virginia - The freshman from Winchester, Virginia placed 80th out of 166 runners at the Christopher Newport NCAA Regional Preview last week. Johnson completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 28:39. Also Nominated: Sawyer Helms, Pfeiffer.
