USA South Athletes of the Week - Jan. 30, 2023

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Matthew Brown, Greensboro - The junior forward from Orlando, Florida averaged 23.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game as the Pride posted a 2-0 record last week against USA South opposition. In a 76-68 win at Mary Baldwin, Brown totaled 26 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. In a 93-81 victory over Methodist, Brown scored 20 points with seven rebounds, four blocks, two assists, and one steal. Also Nominated: Montell Moore, Methodist; Taylan Rowe, Pfeiffer; Jadon Carnes, Brevard; Brayden Dixon, N.C. Wesleyan. 

Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Jadon Carnes, Brevard - The freshman forward from Concord, North Carolina averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per game as the Tornados dropped two USA South contests last week. In an 87-78 loss at Pfeiffer, Carnes scored 18 points with four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. In a 91-71 loss to Mary Baldwin, Carnes totaled a career-high 25 points with six rebounds, and two assists. Also Nominated: Derrion Hicklen, Methodist; Clayton Robinson, Pfeiffer.

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Addison Newman, Southern Virginia - The Cedar City, Utah sophomore guard scored a team-high 21 points with six rebounds in the team's only contest of last week, an 81-79 overtime win over Brevard. Newman also added a game-high eight steals along with four assists in the victory. Also Nominated: Tanaesha Ellison, Pfeiffer; Audrey Jennings, Greensboro; Alize Munn, Salem; Makenna Parkins, Brevard; Nadia Simmons, N.C. Wesleyan; Aniyah Tate, Methodist; Kate Perko, Meredith.

Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Minnie Griffin, Salem - The Orlando, Florida first-year guard averaged 17.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and  2.0 steals per game as the Spirits posted a 1-1 record last week against USA South competition. In a 70-53 win over Mary Baldwin, Griffin scored 20 points with seven rebounds, four steals, one assist, and one block. In a 99-67 loss to League-leader Greensboro, Griffin totaled 14 points and four rebounds. Also Nominated: Hannah Isley, Pfeiffer; Olivia Miller, Brevard; Presley Heggie, Southern Virginia.
