USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 16, 2023

  • Football Offensive Player of the Week
    Ethan Beamish, Brevard - The sophomore quarterback from Simpsonville, South Carolina tossed four touchdown passes in a 52-20 win over USA South foe Methodist last week. Beamish was 22-for-34 with 259 yards through the air without an interception. Also Nominated: Tim Johnson, Belhaven; Bryson Rollins, Maryville; Anthony Byrd, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
    Ja'Shawn Harris, Greensboro - The freshman wide receiver from High Point, North Carolina touched the ball once on offense and scored a touchdown in a 34-28 loss to USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan last week. Harris scored on a 67-yard run in the fourth quarter to put the Pride up a touchdown. He also added a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the first quarter.     Football Defensive Player of the Week
    Quintrell Bowman, Brevard - The junior defensive back from Roxboro, North Carolina picked off two passes and forced a fumble in a 52-20 win over USA South foe Methodist last week. Each of Bowman's interceptions came in the third quarter with the first turning into a Brevard touchdown on the ensuing offensive play. His forced fumble occurred in the first quarter, was recovered by Brevard, and converted into a Tornado touchdown three plays later.     Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
    Larry Jones, Greensboro - The freshman defensive back from Rocky Mount, North Carolina was in on four tackles and grabbed an interception in a 34-28 loss to USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan last week. Jones made two unassisted tackles with two assisted take downs while his first-quarter interception came deep in Pride territory. Also Nominated: None.

    Football Special Teams Player of the Week
    Braxtyn Green, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman place kicker/punter from Live Oak, Florida was a perfect 2-for-2 on field goals and point-after-touchdowns while averaging 39.9 yards per punt in a 34-28 win over USA South foe Greensboro last week. Green hit field goals from 45 and 40 yards out while two of his punts landed inside the 20-yardline with a long of 57 yards.   • Men's Soccer Player of the Week
    Bastien Dechamps, N.C. Wesleyan - The Angers, France junior forward notched a hat trick of three goals while also adding an assist in the only contest last week for the Battling Bishops, a 6-0 victory over USA South rival Brevard. Dechamps was in on the first four goals of the match, starting the scoring in the 28th minute, assisting on the next, and netting the following two. Also Nominated: Casey Atwell, Methodist; Cade VanEtten, Pfeiffer; Kenneth Hall, Greensboro; Jose Martinez, William Peace.

    Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Jose Martinez, William Peace - The Wake Forest, North Carolina senior defender scored a goal and helped preserve a shutout in the only contest last week for the Pacers, a 1-0 win over USA South rival Methodist. In the 76th minute, Martinez put away a second chance goal through traffic which proved to be the game-winner.     Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Silas Hartkaemper, N.C. Wesleyan - The Rietberg, Germany freshman defender helped the Battling Bishops post a shutout over USA South rival Brevard in the team's only contest last week. Hartkaemper and the N.C. Wesleyan defense held Brevard to just three shots, only one of which was on goal. Also Nominated: Trey Gohr, Methodist; Jalen King, Greensboro; Benjamin Landaverde, Pfeiffer.

  • Women's Soccer Player of the Week
    Makinna Winterton, Southern Virginia - The Charlottesville, Virginia senior forward scored three times with one assist in a 1-1 week for the Knights. In a 3-0 loss to top-ranked Christopher Newport, Winterton managed two shots, one on-goal. In a 7-1 win over USA South foe Pfeiffer, Winterton notched a hat trick by scoring three times, including the eventual game-winning goal in the 20th minute.     Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Carolina Simpkins, Methodist - The Sanford, North Carolina sophomore goalkeeper posted two shutouts as the Monarchs went 2-0 last week against USA South opposition. In 180 minutes in goal, Simpkins stopped all ten shots faced. In wins over Greensboro and Brevard, Simpkins made five saves in each match. Also Nominated: Sophia Pagnamenta, Greensboro; Kasey Wilkins, Meredith; Gaby Vazquez, William Peace; Nicole Arroyo, Brevard; Hailey Gadd, Southern Virginia.

    Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Yaneli Sanchez, Methodist - The Garner, North Carolina freshman forward assisted on two game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for the Monarchs against USA South opposition. In a 2-0 win over Greensboro, Sanchez assisted on the first goal of the match at the 39-minute mark. In a 1-0 victory over Brevard, Sanchez assisted on the only goal of the contest, the eventual game-winner in the 20th minute.   • Volleyball Player of the Week
    Jamie Holton, Methodist - The sophomore outside hitter from Nags Head, North Carolina averaged 4.90 kills, with a .449 hitting percentage, and 2.40 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week wins over USA South foes Pfeiffer, Mary Baldwin, and Brevard. Holton posted one double-double and had week match-highs of 18 kills (twice), 12 digs, one assist, and one service ace. Also Nominated: Payton Shiflet, Greensboro; Makenna Parkins, Brevard; Lauren Bissette, Meredith; Hannah Collier, William Peace; Morgan Shrader, Pfeiffer.

    Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
    Morgan Mayfield, Greensboro - The freshman libero from Mt. Airy, North Carolina averaged 6.67 digs and 1.00 assists per set as the Pride posted a 3-0 record last week with wins over USA South foes Salem and N.C. Wesleyan along with Randolph. Mayfield had week match-highs of 24 digs, five assists, and four service aces. Also Nominated: Blake O'Brien, Methodist; Logan Moore, William Peace; Hannah Jo Jablonski, Meredith; Bailey Lance, Brevard; Gabby Edwards; Pfeiffer.

    Volleyball Rookie of the Week
    Savannah Hovander, Methodist - The freshman middle blocker from Greensboro, North Carolina averaged 3.60 kills per set with a .333 hitting percentage as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week wins over USA South foes Pfeiffer, Mary Baldwin, and Brevard. Hovander had week match-highs of 14 kills, three blocks, and one dig. Also Nominated: Aajah Vazquez, N.C. Wesleyan; Morgan Mayfield, Greensboro; Karmen Rion, Pfeiffer.

  • Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
    Dylan May, Southern Virginia - The Missoula, Montana junior placed first out of 172 runners at the Roanoke Invitational last week. May completed the 8,000-meter course in a season-best time of 24:40. Also Nominated: Alex Topoly, Methodist; Ayden Harper, N.C. Wesleyan; Garrett Spangler, Brevard.

    Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
    Joe Hughes, Southern Virginia - The Las Vegas, Nevada freshman placed out of 172 runners at the Roanoke Invitational last week. Hughes completed the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:51. Also Nominated: Gabe Sawyer, Methodist.

  • Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
    Maddie Merna, Meredith - The Apex, North Carolina sophomore placed 30th out of 85 runners at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational last week. Merna completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 23:24. Also Nominated: Lissie Hill, Southern Virginia; Sandra Diaz-Martinez, Brevard.

    Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
    Delaney Bundy, Meredith - The Cary, North Carolina freshman placed 57th out of 85 runners at the East Carolina Pirate Invitational last week. Bundy completed the 6,000-meter course in a time of 24:29. Also Nominated: Lissie Hill, Southern Virginia; Makalyn Wilms, Methodist.
