USA South Athletes of the Week - Oct. 23, 2023

  • Football Offensive Player of the Week
    Bryson Rollins, Maryville - The sophomore quarterback from Elizabethton, Tennessee accounted for all four Maryville touchdowns, with three on the ground and one through the air, in a 26-6 win over USA South rival LaGrange last week. Rollins was 19-of-32 passing with 237 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Rollins carried the ball 13 times for 38 yards and a career-high three scores.     Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
    Christian Drumgoole, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman wide receiver from Dinwiddie, Virginia accumulated 123 yards with one score in a 34-7 win over USA South foe Southern Virginia last week. Drumgoole caught seven passes, including a 37-yard touchdown to put the Battling Bishops on the board in the second quarter. Also Nominated: Tareek Smith, Greensboro; Antojuan Woody, Huntingdon.

    Football Defensive Player of the Week
    Ryan Gibson, Maryville - The junior defensive back from Bristol, Tennessee picked off two passes with three tackles in a 26-6 win over USA South foe LaGrange last week. Gibson's first interception came late in the first half and resulted in a Scot touchdown four plays later. Gibson's second pick came on the final play of the game as he became the first Scot since the spring-2021 season to intercept two passes in a game.     Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
    Michael Forney, Greensboro - The freshman linebacker from Concord, North Carolina accounted for the Pride's only score of the day in a 56-8 loss to USA South foe Huntingdon. Forney scooped up a fourth-quarter fumble and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. Also Nominated: Jimmy Byrd, Belhaven; CJ Figgers, Huntingdon.

    Football Special Teams Player of the Week
    Braxtyn Green, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman place kicker/punter from Live Oak, Florida set a new program record by connecting on a 51-yard field goal try in a 34-7 win over USA South foe Southern Virginia last week. Green also added a 46-yard make and was perfect on four point-after-touchdown attempts. Finally, Green averaged 34.6 yards on three punts which included a long of 53 yards. Also Nominated: Constantine Hontzas, Belhaven.

  • Men's Soccer Player of the Week
    Christopher Shoffler, Methodist - The Bowie, Maryland senior midfielder scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Monarchs posted a 2-0 record last week against USA South opposition. In a 3-1 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Shoffler scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 65th minute before assisting on an insurance goal ten minutes later. In a 2-1 victory at Brevard, Shoffler assisted on the game-tying goal in the 81st minute.     Men's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Trey Gohr, Methodist - The Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman goalkeeper posted two wins and collected six saves for the Monarchs last week against USA South opposition. In a 3-1 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Gohr made two saves while, in a 2-1 victory at Brevard, Gohr stopped four shots. Also Nominated: Ali Jaafar, Pfeiffer; Cristian Del Cid Portillo, Greensboro; Pierre Leo, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Alex Michael, Pfeiffer - The New Orleans, Louisiana freshman forward was in on two game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for the Falcons against USA South rivals. In 1-0 win over William Peace, Michael scored the match's lone goal in the 26th minute. In a 1-0 victory over Mary Baldwin, Michael assisted on the eventual game-winner in the 77th minute.   • Women's Soccer Player of the Week
    Makinna Winterton, Southern Virginia - The Charlottesville, Virginia senior forward scored three times with one assist in a 2-0 week for the Knights against USA South competition. In a 2-0 win over Greensboro, Winterton was in on both goals, assisting on the first score of the match before scoring one of her own. In a 5-0 victory over William Peace, Winterton scored two insurance goals within two minutes of each other to help the Knights clinch the program's first USA South regular season title.     Women's Soccer Defender of the Week
    Carolina Simpkins, Methodist - The Sanford, North Carolina sophomore goalkeeper posted one shutout as the Monarchs went 1-0-1 last week against USA South opposition. In 180 minutes in goal, Simpkins stopped 15 of 16 shots faced. In a 1-1 draw with Meredith, Simpkins recorded a career-high 11 saves. In a 5-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Simpkins stopped all four shots faced to post the shutout. Also Nominated: Julia Howland, Greensboro; Kasey Wilkins, Meredith; Nicole Arroyo, Brevard; Hailey Gadd, Southern Virginia.

    Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
    Yaneli Sanchez, Methodist - The Garner, North Carolina freshman forward scored three goals and assisted on two others in a 1-0-1 week for the Monarchs against USA South opposition. In a 1-1 draw with Meredith, Sanchez was scoreless with three shots on goal. In a 5-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan Sanchez was in on all five scores by notching her second career hat trick with three goals to go along with two assists. Also Nominated: Abby Romanisko, Greensboro; Claire Stephens, Southern Virginia; Emily Howle, Brevard.

  • Volleyball Player of the Week
    Payton Shiflet, Greensboro - The sophomore outside hitter from Asheboro, North Carolina averaged 5.38 kills and 3.00 digs per set as the Pride posted a 2-0 record last week wins over USA South foes Pfeiffer and Methodist. Shiflet posted one double-double and had week match-highs of 28 kills, 19 digs, two service aces, and one assist. Also Nominated: Anna Rymer, Salem; Ashley Hoxit, Brevard; Sydney Bassett, Southern Virginia; Lauren Bissette, Meredith; Morgan Shrader, Pfeiffer; Hannah Hewett, Methodist.

    Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
    Madison Green, Southern Virginia - The freshman middle blocker from Mesa, Arizona averaged 1.60 blocks per set as the Knights defeated William Peace, 3-2, in the team's only match last week. Green totaled eight blocks with four kills and one dig. Also Nominated: Blake O'Brien, Methodist; Bailey Lance, Brevard; Valeria Rosa Lopez, Salem; Sara Dees, Meredith; Payton Shiflet, Greensboro; Gabby Edwards; Pfeiffer.

    Volleyball Rookie of the Week
    Morgan Mayfield, Greensboro - The freshman libero from Mt. Airy, North Carolina averaged 4.88 digs per set as the Pride posted a 2-0 record last week wins over USA South foes Pfeiffer and Methodist. Mayfield had week match-highs of 34 digs, three assists, and two service aces. Also Nominated: Savannah Hovander, Methodist; Fiona Egan, N.C. Wesleyan; Karmen Rion, Pfeiffer; Kinley Copeland, Meredith; Madison Green, Southern Virginia.
