USA South Athletes of the Week - March 20, 2023

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Blake Burchett, Brevard - The senior infielder from Mooresville, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-12 (.500) with a .667 on-base percentage, and a .667 slugging percentage to go along with seven runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, one sacrifice fly, seven walks, and seven stolen bases as the Tornados posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 23-3 loss to Cortland (receiving votes nationally), Burchett was hitless. In a three-game sweep of Conference foe Southern Virginia, Burchett was a combined 6-for-9 with seven runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, one sacrifice fly, seven walks, and seven stolen bases. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Sam Peddycord, Greensboro - The senior from Kernersville, North Carolina earned a complete-game victory in his only appearance last week for the Pride, a 4-1 victory over USA South foe Mary Baldwin. Peddycord allowed just one unearned run on seven hits with zero walks and seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Cesar Rodriguez, Brevard; Philip Berger, William Peace.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Evan Sykes, Greensboro - The freshman infielder from Graham, North Carolina went a combined 8-for-13 (.615) with a .688 on-base percentage, and a 1.385 slugging percentage to go along with six runs scored, six RBI, two doubles, one triple, two home runs, and two walks as the Pride posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 13-3 loss to nationally-ranked Lynchburg, Sykes was 3-for-4 with three RBI, one double, and one triple. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Sykes was a combined 5-for-9 with six runs scored, three RBI, one double, two home runs, and two walks. Also Nominated: None.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Drake Hobgood, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Henderson, North Carolina tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in two relief appearances, getting one win, last week for the Battling Bishops. In an 8-3  loss to nationally-ranked Christopher Newport, Hobgood tossed a perfect inning. In a 16-14 win over USA South foe Pfeiffer, Hobgood got the final four outs of the game, without allowing a run, to grab his first career victory. Also  Nominated: Sam Safrit, Pfeiffer; Michael Richards, Greensboro; Matt Evans, Brevard.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Molly Alejandrino, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore infielder from Virginia Beach, Virginia was a combined 11-for-12 (..917), with a .933 on-base percentage, and a 1.917 slugging percentage to go along with nine runs scored, 17 RBI, one double, one triple, three home runs, three walks, and one stolen base in a 4-0 week for the Battling Bishops. In a doubleheader sweep of Elizabeth City State, Alejandrino was 5-for-6 with five runs scored, seven RBI, one home run, two walks, and one stolen base. In a doubleheader sweep of Averett, Alejandrino was a perfect 6-for-6 with four runs scored, ten RBI, one double, one triple, two home runs, and one walk. Also Nominated: Carlee McWilliam, Salem; Kassie Simmons, Greensboro; Alyssa Drake, Meredith; Mikayla Morgan, Brevard; Jaci Shumway, Southern Virginia.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Kassie Simmons, Greensboro - The senior from Gibsonville, North Carolina earned a 2-0 record in three appearances, two starts, last week for the Pride. In 15.0 innings, Simmons posted a 1.40 ERA, allowing four runs (three earned) on ten hits with ten walks and 17 strikeouts. Simmons' first win of the week came Guilford as she six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with six walks and seven strikeouts. After a no-decision in a second game against Guilford where Simmons tossed two hitless innings with five strikeouts, she earned a complete-game victory over Ferrum, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Also Nominated: Emily Humphery, N.C. Softball Rookie of the Week
Savannah Thompson, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman catcher from Franklinton, North Carolina was a combined 8-for-13 (.615) with a .643 on-base percentage and a 1.231 slugging percentage to go along with three runs scored, 12 RBI, two doubles, and two home runs as the Battling Bishops posted a 4-0 record last week. In a doubleheader sweep of Elizabeth City State, Thompson was 4-for-7 with two runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, and one home run. In a doubleheader sweep of Averett, Thompson was a combined 4-for-6 with one run scored, five RBI, one double, and one home run. Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Lillie Davis, Meredith - The freshman from Roxboro, North Carolina earned a 1-2 record in three appearances, all starts, last week for the Avenging Angels. In 20.0 innings pitched, Davis posted a 2.10 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Davis' victory came in complete-game fashion as she allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in a 6-3 win over Farmingdale State. MEN'S LACROSSE

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Brady McGuire, Piedmont - The Westminster, Maryland junior attackman totaled 15 points on seven goals and eight assists, to go along with seven ground balls, as the Lions posted a 2-0 record last week. In a 13-11 win over Virginia Wesleyan, McGuire scored three goals with five assists and five ground balls. In a 17-11 victory over USA South foe Methodist, McGuire scored four times with three assists and two ground balls. Also Nominated: Riely Murray, William Peace; Caden Bacz, Huntingdon; Hunter Vaughan, Methodist; Quinn Becraft, Pfeiffer; Austin Abourjilie, Greensboro; Jon Yandow, Southern Virginia; Ryan Comeau, LaGrange; Parker Corbett, Brevard.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Brennon Madonia, Huntingdon - The Dacula, Georgia sophomore faceoff specialist was 55-for-61 (.902) at the "X", to go along with 33 ground balls, in a 2-0 week for the Hawks. In a 21-5 victory over USA South foe Brevard, Madonia was 25-for-28 on faceoffs while also grabbing 16 ground balls. In a 26-3 victory over Warren Wilson, Madonia was 30-for-33 on faceoffs while also collecting 17 ground balls. Also Nominated: Thomas Soden, William Peace; Andrew Pagano, Piedmont; Tyler Bennett, Methodist; Kendall Jones, Pfeiffer; Caleb Brodie, Southern Virginia; Isaac Bohrer, LaGrange.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Gage Kettlewell, Huntingdon - The Washington Township, Ohio freshman midfielder totaled 14 points on 14 goals with two ground balls in a 2-0 week for the Hawks. In a 21-5 victory over USA South foe Brevard, Kettlewell scored seven goals with two ground balls. In a 26-3 victory over Warren Wilson, Kettlewell again found the back of the net seven times. WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Alissa Johnson, Southern Virginia - The Salt Lake City, Utah senior attacker totaled 18 points on 13 goals and five assists with 18 draw controls, 13 ground balls, and three caused turnovers in a 1-2 week for the Knights. In an 18-9 loss to Randolph-Macon, Johnson scored five goals with two assists, six draw controls, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. In an 18-8 loss to Juniata, Johnson tallied two goals, two assists, five ground balls, and five draw controls. Finally, in a 20-11 win over USA South foe Methodist, Johnson scored six goals with one assist, seven draw controls, six ground balls, and one caused turnover. Also Nominated: Maggi Spratlin, Piedmont; Mackenzie Wolford, Huntingdon; Mikayla Ramos, Methodist; Jessica Dowdy, Meredith; Emily Denaga, Brevard.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Ava Trankina, Piedmont - The Johns Creek, Georgia sophomore midfielder caused a season-high six turnovers in the team's only contest last week, a 21-0 win over USA South rival Greensboro. In the win, Trankina also added three draw controls, two ground balls, two goals, and two assists. Also Nominated: Elizabeth Todd, Huntingdon; Kennedy Martin, Methodist; Faaletupu Mulitalo, Southern Virginia; Meredith Sinkler, Meredith; Lex MacLauchlin, Brevard.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Paige Kneubuhler, Brevard - The Evansville, Indiana freshman attacker/midfielder totaled seven points on six goals and one assist to go along with six ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers in a 1-1 week for the Tornados. In a 20-4 loss to Meredith, Kneubuhler scored three times with two ground balls and two draw controls. In a 16-6 victory over Huntingdon, Kneubuhler totaled scored three goals with one assist, four ground balls, two caused turnovers, and one draw control. Also Nominated: Amara Veng, Huntingdon; Clara Welch, Piedmont; Kate Richards, Southern Virginia; Reese Walker, Meredith.

 

MEN'S TENNIS

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Diego Segovia, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from San Gabriel, Venezuela earned a 2-0 singles and doubles record last week in the matches he appeared in for the Battling Bishops. In singles, Segovia earned a win at the number-three position over an opponent from 37th-ranked Christopher Newport and a victory at the number-two spot over an opponent from USA South foe Pfeiffer. In doubles, Segovia teamed with Sean Keane to gain wins over players from Christopher Newport and Pfeiffer. Also Nominated: Benedikt Pfeiffer, Pfeiffer.

Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Mateo Sonaglia, Pfeiffer - The freshman from La Paz, Bolivia earned a 1-1 singles and doubles record last week for the Falcons against USA South competition. In singles, Sonaglia collected a win over an opponent from Mary Baldwin at the number-five spot. In doubles, Sonaglia teamed with Andres Valdez-Arze to gain a victory over a Mary Baldwin duo at the number-two position. Also Nominated: None.

Men's Doubles Team of the Week
John Falke and Augusto Roca, N.C. Wesleyan - The Battling Bishop duo earned a 2-0 record at various doubles positions last week. The team's wins came against nationally-ranked Christopher Newport at the number-three spot and Pfeiffer at the top-position. Also Nominated: None.

 

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Kristal Dule, N.C. Wesleyan - The sophomore from Italy earned 2-0 records at both the top singles and doubles spots last week over USA South competition, Mary Baldwin and Brevard. In doubles, Dule teamed with Andrea Elaez Miranda to grab the victories. Also Nominated: Alison Sloop, Pfeiffer.

Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
Alana Bridges, Salem - The junior from Morganton, North Carolina, playing in her first year of collegiate tennis, earned 2-0 singles and doubles records last week for the Spirits. In singles, Bridges earned wins at the number-four position over opponents from Agnes Scott and Johnson & Wales. In doubles, Bridges teamed with Harley Hedrick to grab a win at the number-three spot against Agnes Scott before joining Haley Gilley for a win over Johnson & Wales at the number-two position. Also Nominated: Emily Moore, Pfeiffer.

Women's Doubles Team of the Week
Kristal Dule and Andrea Elaez Miranda, N.C. Wesleyan - The Battling Bishop duo earned a 2-0 record last week at the number-one position against USA South opponents Mary Baldwin and Brevard. Also Nominated: Madison Bowen & Jada Ore, Greensboro; Megan Rekieta & Alison Sloop, Pfeiffer.

 

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Men's Track Athlete of the Week
Drew Topoly, Methodist - The senior from Smithfield, North Carolina competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational last week in three events, setting program records in two of them. With a time of 8:45.41 in the 3,000-meters and a time of 30:49.91 in the 10,000-meters, Topoly set new personal records. In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Topoly set a new personal best with a time of 9:27.13. Also Nominated: Tevin Colson, Pfeiffer; Daniel De La Cruz , Southern Virginia. 

Men's Field Athlete of the Week
Aaron Nash, Methodist - The sophomore from Powhatan, Virginia competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational last week in the long jump. With a mark of 7.09 meters, Nash set a new personal best. Also Nominated: None.

Men's Track Rookie of the Week
Josiyah Woods, Methodist - The freshman from Zebulon, North Carolina competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational last week in two events. In the 100-meters, Woods finished in 11.36 and in the 200-meters his time was 23.25. Also Nominated: None. 

Men's Field Rookie of the Week
Shomare Hazley, Methodist - The freshman from Erwin, North Carolina competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational last week in two events. In the shot put, Hazley's best throw was 11.00 meters while in the discus, Hazley set a mark of 33.17 meters. Also Nominated: None.

 

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD

Women's Track Athlete of the Week
Corrine Weaver, Meredith - The senior from Sanford, North Carolina competed at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational last week in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and set a new program record with a time of 10:51.62. Also Nominated: Madison Lowery, Pfeiffer; Courtney Drumm, Methodist; Sasha Willie , Southern Virginia. 

Women's Field Athlete of the Week
Elizabeth Jones, Pfeiffer - The sophomore from Salisbury, North Carolina competed at the High Point Bill Davidson Invitational last week and was the top Division III performer in the hammer throw with a mark of 42.17 meters. Also Nominated: Brandi Gardner, Methodist; Myla Barnes, William Peace.

Women's Track Rookie of the Week
Carly O'Toole, Meredith - The freshman from Raleigh, North Carolina competed at the UNC-Wilmington Seahawk Invitational last week in the 1,500-meters and set a new personal best with a time of 4:55.11. Also Nominated: Treazure Rosario-Watson, Methodist.

Women's Field Rookie of the Week
Brandi Gardner, Methodist - The freshman from Lacey, Washington competed at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational last week in the long jump and had a best mark of 4.99 meters. Also Nominated: None.
