USA South Athletes of the Week - May 2, 2023

BASEBALL

Baseball Player of the Week
Jake Brown, Pfeiffer - The senior infielder from Winston-Salem, North Carolina went a combined 10-for-13 (.769) with an .824 on-base percentage, and a 1.615 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, seven RBI, two doubles, three home runs, two walks, and one stolen base as the Falcons posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 16-15, ten-inning, win over Roanoke, Brown was 1-for-2 with one run scored, one run batted in, and one double. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Brown was a combined 9-for-11 with seven runs scored, six RBI, one double, three home runs, two walks, and one stolen base. Also Nominated: Kai Hayen, Greensboro; Mitchell Smith, Southern Virginia; Nick Tubolino, William Peace; Tyson Bass, N.C. Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Payne Stolsworth, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior from Salisbury, North Carolina tossed a complete-game shutout to win his only appearance last week, a 1-0 victory over USA South foe Methodist which secured the League regular season title for the Battling Bishops. Stolsworth allowed four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. Also Nominated: John Owen, Pfeiffer; Sam Peddycord, Greensboro; Nathaniel Varnier, William Peace.

Baseball Rookie of the Week
Austin Wood, Pfeiffer - The freshman infielder from Dallas, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-15 (.400) with a .500 on-base percentage, and a .533 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, four walks, and one sacrifice fly as the Falcons posted a 4-0 record last week. In a 16-15, ten-inning, win over Roanoke, Wood was 2-for-4 with four runs scored, one double, and two walks. In a three-game sweep of USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Wood was a combined 4-for-11 with three RBI, one double, and two walks. Also Nominated: Evan Sykes, Greensboro; Logan Sawyer, Brevard.

Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Stephen Dunlow, Greensboro - The freshman from Oxford, North Carolina appeared in relief in three games last week for the Pride without allowing a run over 5.0 innings pitched. Dunlow did not receive any decisions but kept the opponents at bay by allowing four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Sam Safrit, Pfeiffer.

 

SOFTBALL

Softball Player of the Week
Emma Chopko, Pfeiffer - The sophomore catcher from Mooresville, North Carolina was a combined 5-for-7 (.714), with a .714 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage as the Falcons swept a doubleheader from USA South foe Brevard to capture the League regular season title. Chopko also added two runs scored, a run batted in, and two doubles. Also Nominated: Kat Price, Salem; Lydia Hunt, William Peace; Emily Angel, Methodist; Skyler Walker, N.C. Wesleyan; Sarah Manis, Meredith; Krystal Kemp, Southern Virginia.

Softball Pitcher of the Week
Katherine Murphy, William Peace - The senior from Wade, North Carolina earned a 2-0 record in two appearances, both complete-game shutout wins, for the Pacers against USA South competition. In 12 shutout innings, Murphy allowed just two hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts. In a 9-0, five-inning, win over Salem, Murphy allowed one hit and one walk with five strikeouts. In a 5-0 victory over Greensboro, Murphy tossed a one-hitter with two walks and seven strikeouts. Also Nominated: Kali Morton, Pfeiffer; Emma Neeley, Methodist; Emily Humphery, N.C. Softball Rookie of the Week
Emily Angel, Methodist - The freshman infielder from Yorktown, Virginia was a combined 6-for-10 (.600) with a .545 on-base percentage and a 1.700 slugging percentage to go along with four runs scored, eight RBI, two doubles, three home runs, and one sacrifice fly as the Monarchs posted a 4-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Salem, Angel was a combined 4-for-6 with two runs scored, three RBI, two doubles, two home runs, and one sacrifice fly. In a doubleheader sweep of Brevard, Angel was a combined 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and one home run. Also Nominated: Charly Cooper, Pfeiffer; Angelina Jones, William Peace; Ava Lowry, N.C. Wesleyan; Jasmine Webb, Brevard; Katie Claytor, Southern Virginia.

Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
Alli Stertzbach, Salem - The first year from Huntersville, North Carolina posted a 0-3 record with an 8.31 ERA over 16.0 innings pitched last week for the Spirits against USA South opposition. Also Nominated: None.

 

MEN'S LACROSSE

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Hunter Vaughan, Methodist - The Apex, North Carolina senior attackman totaled 11 points on seven goals and four assists as the Monarchs defeated Huntingdon, 18-9, in the team's only contest last week. Vaughan also added two ground balls in the win. Also Nominated: Drew Pond, Brevard; Brady McGuire, Piedmont; Ian Bruggeman, Huntingdon; Clay Haacke, Southern Virginia; Luke Young, LaGrange.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Michael Brown, Southern Virginia - The Leesburg, Virginia sophomore defender totaled game highs of seven ground balls and four caused turnovers as the Knights defeated Piedmont, who was previously undefeated in Conference play, 13-10, in the team's only action last week. The win gave the Knights a first round bye in the upcoming USA South tournament. Also Nominated: Tyler Bennett, Methodist; Johnny Matrona, Piedmont; Jacob Jeffords, LaGrange.

Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Luke Young, LaGrange - The Acworth, Georgia freshman attackman totaled eight points on six goals and two assists in a 17-15 win over USA South foe William Peace, the team's only contest last week. Young also added four ground balls to help send the Panthers to the postseason for the first time in program history. Also Nominated: RJ Breeden, Methodist; Drew Pond, Brevard; Isaac Harrington, Piedmont; EJ Umphries, Huntingdon; Clay Haacke, Southern Virginia.

 

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Kylie Phillips, Meredith - The Greensboro, Maryland senior midfielder totaled six points on five goals and one assist as the Avenging Angels finished an undefeated League regular with a 22-8 win over Piedmont in the team's only contest last week. Phillips also added a game-high 12 draw controls with one ground ball and one caused turnover in the victory. Also Nominated: Kayla Nee, Methodist; Julia Barbato, Pfeiffer; Alissa Johnson, Southern Virginia.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Rylee Webster, Southern Virginia - The Layton, Utah freshman midfielder caused a game-high four turnovers and grabbed four ground balls in the team's only contest last week, a 20-0 win over USA South foe Huntingdon. Webster also added one goal and one assist in the shutout victory. Also Nominated: Tia Marlinghaus, Methodist; Lex MacLauchlin, Brevard; Jordan Pendergraft, Pfeiffer; Jessica Dowdy, Meredith.

Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
Reese Walker, Meredith - The Fayetteville, North Carolina freshman attacker totaled a game-high nine points on three goals and a game-high six assists as the Avenging Angels finished an undefeated League regular with a 22-8 win over Piedmont in the team's only contest last week. Walker also added two ground balls and one caused turnover in the victory. Also Nominated: Paige Kneubuhler, Brevard; Madeline Chadbourne, Pfeiffer; Rylee Webster, Southern Virginia.
