USA South Athletes of the Week - March 24, 2025

  • Baseball Player of the Week
    Zack Geertsen, Southern Virginia - The junior from Draper, Utah went a combined 10-for-17 (.588) with a .652 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage to go along with eight runs scored, three RBI, five doubles, one triple, and five walks as the Knights posted a 2-2 record last week. In a 7-6 loss to Ferrum, Geertsen was 2-for-4 with one run scored, two doubles, and one walk. In taking two of three games from USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan, Geertsen was a combined 8-for-13 with seven runs scored, three RBI, three doubles, one triple, and four walks. Also Nominated: Banks Engle, Methodist; Javier Quintana, N.C.     Baseball Pitcher of the Week
    Drake Hobgood, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior from Henderson, North Carolina appeared in one game, a start, and earned the win against USA South foe Southern Virginia last week. Hobgood tossed six and one-third shutout innings, allowing four hits and one walk with six strikeouts.     Baseball Rookie of the Week
    Gavin Turner, William Peace - The freshman third baseman from Cary, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-16 (.375) with a .444 on-base percentage, and a .750 slugging percentage to go along with five runs scored, six RBI, two home runs, and one walk as the Pacers posted a 2-2 record last week. In taking two of three games from USA South foe Mary Baldwin, Turner was a combined 5-for-14 with five runs scored, six RBI, and two home runs. Also Nominated: Mason Jones, Southern Virginia.

    Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
    Jacob Wilde, Brevard - The freshman from Mills River, North Carolina appeared in two games last week, earning a win and a save both in relief efforts. Wilde totaled three innings pitched and allowed one run on one hit with three strikeouts. Also Nominated: Nick Neubauer, Greensboro.

  • Softball Player of the Week
    Avery Puryear, Meredith - The junior first baseman from Rougemont, North Carolina went a combined 6-for-8 (.750) with a .750 on-base percentage, and a 1.250 slugging percentage in a two-game sweep of USA South foe Brevard in the team's lone contests last week. Puryear scored four runs to go along with seven RBI and four doubles in the victories.     Softball Pitcher of the Week
    Emma Neeley, Methodist - The senior from Hampstead, North Carolina appeared and started in one game last week for the Monarchs as she tossed a complete game shutout to defeat USA South rival Mary Baldwin, 6-0. Neeley allowed four hits and one walk with three strikeouts in the victory. Also Nominated: Abby Southern, Southern Virginia; Emma Bullin, Pfeiffer; Emily Humphrey, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Softball Rookie of the Week
    Jordyn Tong, Greensboro - The freshman infielder from Arcadia, Ohio went a combined 5-for-12 (.417) with a .462 on-base percentage, and a .667 slugging percentage to go along with one run scored, seven RBI, and one home run last week for the Pride. In a doubleheader split with Guilford, Tong was a combined 2-for-6 with two RBI. In a doubleheader sweep of Carolina University, Tong was a combined 3-for-6 with one run scored, five RBI, and one home run. Also Nominated: Analee Morris, Brevard; Savannah Bain, N.C.     Softball Rookie Pitcher of the Week
    Kaylee Manning, Meredith - The freshman from Rocky Mount, Virginia appeared and started in one game last week for the Avenging Angels as she tossed a complete game (five inning) to defeat USA South rival Brevard, 12-2. Manning allowed two unearned runs on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts in the victory. Also Nominated: Addyson Romanczyk, N.C. Wesleyan; Emma Cox, Southern Virginia; Riley Dennis, Salem.

  • Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
    Isaac Harrington, Piedmont - The junior attackman from Palatine, Illinois totaled ten points on four goals and a career-high six assists, to go along with one ground ball and three caused turnovers, in the team's lone contest last week, a 19-9 win over USA South foe William Peace. Also Nominated: Jay Legg, Methodist; Mason Tardiff, Pfeiffer; Adam Jones, LaGrange; Michael Peters, Brevard; Tyson Mauri, Southern Virginia.

    Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
    Michael Keane, Pfeiffer - The freshman defender from Somers, New York totaled seven ground balls and four caused turnovers as the Falcons posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 12-8 loss to UMass-Boston, Keane caused two turnovers and grabbed one ground ball. In a 16-5 win over DePauw, Kean again caused two turnovers and collected six ground balls.     Men's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
    Jay Legg, Methodist - The freshman attackman from Holly Springs, North Carolina totaled eight points on five goals and three assists to go along with four ground balls as the Monarchs posted a 1-1 record last week. In a 26-6 loss to UMass-Boston, Legg grabbed one ground ball. In a 23-10 victory over USA South foe Greensboro, Legg scored a career-high five goals with three assists and three ground balls.   • Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
    Reese Walker, Meredith - The junior attacker from Fayetteville, North Carolina totaled 26 points on 11 goals and 15 assists, with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-0 week. In a 24-2 win over Chowan, Walker scored six times with four assists and one caused turnover. In a 23-0 victory over USA South foe William Peace, Walker totaled three goals, seven assists, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. Finally, in a 19-5 win over USA South rival Piedmont, Walker scored twice with four assists, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers.     Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
    Madeline Horrell, Meredith - The graduate student goalie from Chapel Hill, North Carolina allowed just three goals in 75 total minutes played last week as the Avenging Angels posted a 3-0 record. In 30 combined minutes played against Chowan and USA South foe William Peace, Horrell did not allow a goal and stopped three shots. In a 19-5 win over USA South rival Piedmont, Horrell played 45 minutes and stopped six of the nine shots faced.     Women's Lacrosse Rookie of the Week
    Makenzie Mickelsen, Southern Virginia - The freshman midfielder from Garland, Utah totaled 12 points on eight goals and four assists to go along with 17 draw controls, seven ground balls, and two caused turnovers in a 2-0 week for the Knights against USA South competition. In a 20-3 win over Greensboro, Mickelsen scored four times with one assist, eight draw controls, two ground balls, and one caused turnover. In an 18-0 victory over William Peace, Mickelsen totaled four goals, three assists, nine draw controls, five ground balls, and one caused turnover.   • Men's Tennis Player of the Week
    Matthew Hurley, Methodist - The junior from Faulconbridge, New South Wales, Australia posted a 3-0 singles and doubles record over the past two week for the Monarchs. In singles, at the number-one spot, Hurley defeated opponents from Johnson C. Smith, Johnson & Wales, and Roanoke. In doubles, at the number-two position, he teamed with Decklan Rayner to grab the three victories. Also Nominated: Ayden Montero, Brevard; Luca Knese, N.C.     Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week
    Ayden Montero, Brevard - The freshman from Mandeville, Louisiana earned a singles win at the number-two position last week for the Tornados in the team's lone match over the past two weeks, a 5-2 victory over USA South foe William Peace. Also Nominated: Ethan Carlyle, Methodist; Goncalo Oliveira, Pfeiffer; Juliann Starland, William Peace.

    Men's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
    Wills Belser and Harry Crokam, Methodist - The Monarch duo earned a 3-0 record at the number-one position over the past two weeks with wins over opposition from Johnson C. Smith, Johnson & Wales, and Roanoke. Also Nominated: Hayden LeBlanc and Ethan McGee, Brevard; Luca Knese and Albert Sitwell, N.C. Wesleyan; Bogdan Stan and Andrews Valdez-Arze, Pfeiffer.

  • Women's Tennis Player of the Week
    Megan Rekieta, Pfeiffer - The senior from Lubbock, Texas earned a singles win at the number-one spot in the team's only match last week, a victory over USA South rival Methodist. It was the first dual match win over Methodist for Pfeiffer since 2009. Also Nominated: Annabelle Subirats, Methodist; Andrea Elaez Miranda, N.C. Wesleyan; Adley Keim, Salem; Paula Snelson, Southern Virginia.

    Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week
    Cymone Crump, Salem - The first-year from Middletown, New York earned a 1-1 singles record and a 2-0 doubles mark last week for the Spirits. In singles, at the number-two spot Crump earned a win over an opponent from USA South foe Mary Baldwin. In doubles, at the top-position, Crump teamed with Adley Keim to defeat their opposition from Mary Baldwin and Methodist. Also Nominated: Renata Torres, N.C. Wesleyan; Sonya Rhoades, PfeifferR.

    Women's Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
    Sydney Cohen and Riley Isley, Pfeiffer - The Falcon duo earned a win at the number-two spot last week in their only match, a 6-1 victory over their opponents from USA South foe Methodist. Also Nominated: Bethan Fothergill and Renata Torres, N.C. Wesleyan.

  • Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
    Shevaun Daley, Pfeiffer - The sophomore from Apopka, Florida competed in two events at the Charlotte 49ers Invitational. In the 400 meters, Daley set a program record with a time of 48.99. He also completed the 200 meters in a time of 21.97. Also Nominated: Owen Plucar, Brevard; Tydrick Stewart, Methodist; Joseph Hughes, Southern Virginia.

    Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week
    Nolan Opp, Southern Virginia - The senior from Clearwater, Florida competed at the Washington & Lee Carnival in the javelin. Opp's best throw was 52.13 meters which is a personal best and the top mark in the League so far. Also Nominated: Antonio King, Brevard.

    Men's Outdoor Track Rookie of the Week
    Juan Abascal, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Ampuero, Cantabria, Spain competed in two events at the River City Relays. In the 800 meters, Abascal completed the race in a time of 2:00.80. In the 1,500 meters, Abascal finished in a time of 4:20.52. Also Nominated: Vondre Nelson, Methodist; Bricen Burleson, Pfeiffer; Jalen Williams, Southern Virginia.

    Men's Outdoor Field Rookie of the Week
    Drake Stewart, Pfeiffer - The freshman from Greenville, South Carolina competed in the high jump at the Charlotte 49ers Invitational. Stewart's best effort was 2.06 meters which is the current top mark in the USA South. Also Nominated: Donningtun Walters, Brevard; Ryan Pascual, Southern Virginia.

  • Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
    Heidi Barton, Southern Virginia - The junior from Evanston, West Virginia competed in three events at the Washington & Lee Carnival. In the 1,500 meters, Barton set a new program record with the top time in the USA South this season, 4:41.81. Barton also competed in the 800 meters (2:29.52) and 5,000 meters (18:54.80). Also Nominated: Abigail Clayton, Meredith; Treazure Rosario Watson, Methodist; Ti'Asia Bryant, N.C. Wesleyan.

    Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week
    Jilane Pedersen, Southern Virginia - The senior from St. Louis, Missouri competed at the Washington & Lee Carnival in two events. In the javelin, she established the best throw so far this season in the conference at 32.18 meters. Pedersen also had a best effort of 1.29 meters in the high jump. Also Nominated: Imani Singleton, Brevard; Athena Mowatt, Meredith.

    Women's Outdoor Track Rookie of the Week
    KeSondra Pickett, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman from Rocky Mount, North Carolina has competed in two events so far this season. At the River City Relays, Pickett competed in two track events, finishing the 100 meters in a time of 12.93 and the 200 meters in a time of 26.55. At the Virginia Beach Spring Break Invitational, Pickett finished the 400 meters in a time of 1:02.36 and was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team.     Women's Outdoor Field Rookie of the Week
    Marin Simons, Southern Virginia - The freshman from Silt, Colorado competed in the high jump at the Washington & Lee Carnival, establishing the top mark so far in the USA South this season at 1.59 meters. Also Nominated: Athena Mowatt, Meredith; Kayleen Grullon, Methodist; KeSondra Pickett, N.C. Wesleyan.
