The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2023 All-Conference awards for men's soccer. Individually, Brevard's Ryan Lynch was named Player of the Year while Southern Virginia's Benjamin Simister grabbed Rookie of the Year honors. Methodist's Trey Gohr was named Goalkeeper of the Year while his coach, Justin Terranova, earned Coach of the Year accolades. Additionally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school who their coach felt displayed the best sportsmanship this season.
All awards are voted on by the men's soccer coach at each institution.
Lynch, a senior forward from Charlotte, North Carolina, becomes the first Brevard men's soccer student-athlete to be named USA South Player of the Year. Lynch concluded the regular season tied for second in points (24) and second in goals (11). Lynch also added two assists and four game-winning goals during the regular season. Against USA South opposition-only, Lynch was tied for the League-lead with five goals scored. For his efforts this fall, Lynch was named All-Conference for the fourth consecutive season and the second straight time on the First Team as a forward. He was also named USA South Player of the Week twice this season.
Simister, a St. George Utah sophomore forward, in his first year of collegiate soccer, becomes the first Southern Virginia men's soccer student-athlete to be named USA South Rookie of the Year. During the regular season, Simister led the League in scoring with 30 points on a Conference-best 13 goals to go along with four assists. Simister also compiled a USA South-high six game-winning scores. In Conference play, Simister was tied for the League-lead in goals scored with five to go along with two assists. In addition to his individual accolades, Simister earned First Team All-Conference honors at the forward position while being named USA South Rookie of the Week three times.
Gohr, a Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman goalkeeper becomes the first Methodist men's soccer student-athlete to be named Goalkeeper of the Year. Gohr played 968 minutes during the regular season and led the Conference with a 0.33 goals-against-average, a .895 save percentage, and five shutouts while compiling a 9-1-2 record. Against USA South competition, Gohr was 6-1-0 while leading the League in goals-against-average (0.43), save percentage (.864), and shutouts (3). For his efforts this fall, Gohr was named the First Team All-Conference goalkeeper while also earning USA South Defensive Player of the Week three times.
Terranova, in his 21st season as Methodist's head coach, earns his first USA South Coach of the Year honor. Picked to finish fourth by the coaches in the preseason poll, Terranova's Monarchs claimed the program's tenth regular season Conference crown, and first since 2013, with a record of 6-1-0. The six Conference wins are the most since eight in the 2017 season. Methodist compiled a 10-3-2 overall regular season record, again the most wins since 12 in the 2017 season.
