's "50 Years in 50 Weeks" - 1987-88

(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - The 2013-14 season serves as the 50th for the USA South Athletic Conference. In an effort to relive 50 Years of League memories, the USA South has produced "50 Years in 50 Weeks", a weekly chronicle of some of the great moments in Conference history.

1987 - 1988

  • St. Andrew’s and UNC-Greensboro depart the Conference at the conclusion of the academic year.
  • Christopher Newport’s Carl Haynes sets Conference single-game men’s basketball record for blocked shots with 11.
  • N.C. Wesleyan men’s soccer earns a share of its first-ever Conference regular season championship and sets a League regular-season record with 73 assists.
  • Future Conference Hall of Famer, Methodist baseball’s Jansen Evans, sets Conference single-season record with 78 runs scored and career League records with 194 games played, 773 at-bats, 267 runs scored, 297 hits and 21 triples.
  • UNC–Greensboro women’s basketball team scores a Conference single-game record 139 points versus Averett and later in the season sets single-game Conference Tournament records for field goals made, 63, highest field goal percentage, 66.7%, and rebounds, 76.
  • Christopher Newport men’s basketball sets a Conference single-game record with 38 assists versus Averett and establishes the League single-season record with 970 field goals made.
  • UNC-Greensboro wins its third consecutive NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer National Championship.

Future Conference Hall of Famer, Christopher Newport’s Lamont Strothers, earns first of three League Men’s Basketball Tournament MVP honors.

N.C. Wesleyan softball captures its first
