's "50 Years in 50 Weeks" - 1988-89

(FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - The 2013-14 season serves as the 50th for the USA South Athletic Conference. In an effort to relive 50 Years of League memories, the USA South has produced "50 Years in 50 Weeks", a weekly chronicle of some of the great moments in Conference history.

1988 - 1989

  • Virginia Wesleyan spends its final year as a member of the Conference.
  • N.C. Wesleyan men’s soccer’s Shamil Salah sets single–season record with 20 assists.
  • Methodist’s Clinton Montford sets single-game and season Conference men’s basketball records for rebounds with 36 and 459, respectively.
  • Virginia Wesleyan wins its first and only Conference Women’s Basketball title.
  • Ferrum’s Andre Levisy sets single-game Conference men’s basketball record by scoring 47 points and making 25 free throws versus Upsala.
  • Averett women’s basketball sets single-game Conference record with 18 blocked shots versus N.C. Wesleyan.
  • Methodist women’s tennis wins the program’s first Conference Tournament crown.

Ferrum College officially becomes
a member of the Conference.


N.C. Wesleyan baseball captures the
NCAA Division III National Championship.


Future Conference Hall of Famer, Methodist’s
Steve Conley, earns first of 18 career
men’s golf Coach of the Year honors.


Christopher Newport volleyball’s Ruth Castellon
sets Conference Tournament single-match record
with 44 digs versus N.C. Wesleyan. Her 73 total tournament digs is still a tournament record today.

Methodist volleyball captures its first and only Conference Regular Season championship.

Methodist men’s golf finishes as runner-up at
the NCAA Division III National Championships
while the Monarchs’ John McCullough
captures the individual National Title.
